I’m somewhat content. I do want to add 1-2 more as time goes on.

I currently own 10 watches, but only two Rolex. I am interesting in acquiring 1-2 more Rolex. The others are a vintage Speedmaster, 1 semi-vintage Speedy (my first watch) a modern Seamaster and some other more obscure references all within the same brand. My focus is on a SS Sky-dweller and Speedy 321. I am unlike most people on TRF in that I do not care about Daytonas. I can see selling on some of the others that may get less wrist time once I get the others that I am interested in.
I think 10 is the right amount for me but it depends on the mix.

Joking. I’m downsizing from my current 8. For me, I think 5 is a good number, maybe 4. Not 3 though. 3 is so 3.

Current collection. Also have a Snoopy but those get the most wrist time. Not sure if I’ll keep it. But yeah, recently reduced from 9 watches to those primary 4.

I usually mostly end up wearing the same 1-2 pieces in rotation. I then consciously feel the need to wear any others in my collection, which honestly takes away from my enjoyment and feels forced. On that basis 2 would be my perfect rational collection size.

The above said, I’m currently at 6 and fancy getting down to 3; a land, sea and air trio from 3 different brands. Two of trio are already in place…

I have 9 or 10. I would rather have 4-6, but those 4 or 5 so I would sell barely add up to to 10% of the total collection value. As long as I occasionally enjoy them I don't feel a strong urge to be rid of them.

So how many is too many?...one more than you'll regularly wear and enjoy.

4 pcs are the max
5 pcs or more are too many

I think this partly depends on whether or not you would sell or trade. 10-12 watches IS enough, but for the collector mentality, enough is (almost) never enough. If you would buy and sell, then you could always have a dozen, but change them up. If not, then you start accumulating. I'm at the 13 level (I think) but I'm really not willing to sell anything, so now I'm just adding.

For me 5 works well.
- one daily which get 80% of wrist time
- one for a bit of variation/fun
- 2 dressed watches ( black and brown leather strap)
- one more discrete/under the radar watch

The hard limit I have set for myself is 20. Even at 20 I feel it's too many to wear them all properly. One day I think I'll try and get to 5 or 6 as my wearing rotation set. Maybe 10.

I think three is a good number, one for everyday, one that’s a bit more for special occasions and one that you don’t need but just want. Unfortunately I’m not sure I can keep to that rule myself

Lots of interesting conversation about the types of watches you need.

Personally, I’d never buy a watch to be worn for niche occasions. This is why I prefer a Datejust to be my dress watch. It works in that mode, but it’s far more versatile than that. I could swim with it and wear with casual outfits if I want to.

Basically, all my watches are GADA watches. I just rotate between them.

I have 2 Rolex, 2 Omega, a Panerai, and IWC. It feels like too much as it is, so i'm out. But I don't plan to let any go. If I had to give one away, it would probably be the IWC simply because it is the only one with no specific life memory / time (the first, wedding, honeymoon, around child birth) attached to it.
