Are you buying the watch, or the image?

MY OPINION ONLY!

I would argue the GMT Pepsi photographs as good or better than any other Rolex. The imagery in Marketing material is superb as with most of their work. I tried on a Pepsi with jubilee today at an AD and it was so underwhelming. It felt like a very different watch than the ads depict. I was really surprised how light and dainty the jubilee felt in particular.

It makes you wonder, do most chase the actual timepiece or the image of it?!

I think the image plays a big role. Rolex are geniuses in marketing!. No company markets better. Some of the smartest people on the planet work for them. When I bought the Bluesy, it was all about the watch!. One of the most stunning Rolex watches made today!.

I think the gold Daytona is far better in person than in image. So if you're chasing that image, you'll have a wonderful surprise when you finally get it on-wrist.

Both the GMT and Daytona are very sexy in large macro images. I know many who found them underwhelming on the wrist once they finally tried them on. Personally for my first Rolex, I went to buy a GMT but left the store with an Explorer II. Side by side, on my wrist with my eye, the Explorer II was ten times the watch and everything I could have wanted. GMT left me less than impressed.

That is exactly what happened to me with the GMT and the Sub Date. Sub all the way, was an instant decision.

The color on the BLRO isn’t for everyone. You may like the color in one light and hate it in another.

I sold the BLRO (jubilee) quickly and picked up a Sub a couple of years back. Never looked back.

It's 100% image no doubt. Rolex display cases were full 6-7 years ago and "waitlists" were reserved for the hot pieces. Everyone wants the name now

I think I kind of felt the same way, but once you have seen it in all lighting and lived with the Jubilee for some time, you will get it. I think it's sublime.

I only get watches that I’ve tried on in advance, and like the design, the technology, and how it looks on my wrist. I wouldn’t consider spending the kind of money. It takes these days on something that works appealing in a photograph. That line of thinking has helped me build, a satisfying collection.

ok, ok, sure, now I'll admit, there may be (rare) times I have to magically create the 'purpose' to fit the narrative so getting the timepiece 'makes perfect sense' ... plus it makes me happy.

I've been a GMT-Master fan since 1964 when I was a newly minted private pilot on active duty at Vandenberg AFB. I finally picked up a 1978 ref. 1675 and wore it for decades before buying my current pre-owned 16710 in 2020. For me, it's a useful tool for flight planning and for logging my ham radio contacts in GMT. I love the jump hour hand function for changing the time as I travel across time zones and switch between DST and standard time. I also like the ability to change bezel inserts between Pepsi and Noir, and do so frequently. It is a wonderful fit on my 6 3/4" wrist.

It's the watch and its functions, not the image for me.

I remember having a GMT BLNR on my wrist at the AD when it had been introduced. Walked out with DJ II instead. Price wasn't the issue...I just didn't care for the look of that model at the time.

Of course, I was able to compare real watches in the flesh and decide. Pretty rare occurrence now.

Hans Wilsdorf who started Rolex was not a watchmaker, he was a salesman, a marketing genius. Advertising photos are designed to make one salivate, a Cordon Blu or a Rolex.

Not on Rolex. I tried on a PP Nautilus, 10 years ago, and was positively underwhelmed. Then I learned about the non-hacking, at that time, and shared movement and was really turned off. Lol, boy was I wrong.

I would guess a lot of people do want to photograph well, I would also guess a lot of pompous self-righteous people who are possibly overcompensating and lying a bit will tell you that that they only buy for them, and they don’t care what other people think.

I wouldn't call it dainty, but rather the most comfortable bracelet I've ever worn. Looks are subjective. Buy what you like

I have a suspicion it will be the Kermit because even my AD thinks that it will be discontinued or they may be working on a new more vibrant bezel which is why production has slowed.

I never liked jubilee bracelets and the shade of the red color looks "weird" to me.Now the batgirl is badazz.

I buy watches for myself, the model/brand/configuration I prefer, and others or the image it sends to them I really don't care at all...

In a personal choice of brand and model, marketing is key for the first-time buyer. As said above by many, Rolex marketing is masterful.

For me, my first Rolex purchase was in 2000 - and my choice was definitely informed by marketing adverts while reading National Geographic. The Polar Explorer II beckoned.

I knew nothing else - I was very lucky to find one at a nearby AD and bought it.
