Like I said, I am really happy with my current collection, so I don’t want to muck it up to bad. I personally would go 1 - $12K over 4 - $3K, but 4 $15K over 1 - $60K The one in the middle is the challenge -1 $30K Say White gold yacht, Master Falcons Eye Vs 4 in the $7k range. For example Speedmaster Saphire Sandwich, Tudor Pelegos Blue, Breitling Navitimer & heck you could throw a no date Sub in that 4 watch lineup and be under $30K. I think I found my Answer. |

GRAIL - Myth is that "one" watch isn't enough. It certainly can be.

I have too many watches right now.
I probably have 10 I will never sell and another 15 that I am going to sell to get a serious grail piece. I could never just have one watch.

Grail has to be a watch that would have to be a daily wear.
Even then 2 would be nice.

I voted with my feet. 4 amazing watches for below. Best move ever. And now I’m brewing the next 4 for 1 consolidation later this year. :

Ideally just the grail. Realistically, at least 2 but no more then 3 or 4.
I lived with just one for almost 25 years, went up to 8, now down to 4.

When everyone’s selling or downsizing, how? TRF sales? Trade in? Flea market sales? How?

Grail. I wanted a watch that would be with me every day. Now that grail happened to be a humble sub but that's what I really wanted. Worn it every day for the last 5 years and it's so weird but I've liked it every single day.

A lesser watch just diverts funds from what I really want and then I find myself unfulfilled and farther away from my goal. I will buy a lesser watch if I really love it for what it is but I won’t buy it to scratch an itch or as a substitute.

There isn’t a standard definition of what a grail watch is.
I have 5 watches and I love them all. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

The word 'grail' should not have been used here. If you need multiple styles/complications, then get them. If you are able to get your grail, you get it, no matter what. Personally, I'd much prefer having one great watch as long as it could tell time and had a bezel. In my situation, nothing else is needed.

Grail but with a caveat… there is a good chance the grail will lose it’s grail status after awhile and your eyes go wandering…

Grail for sure.
But it’s funny to me that I started out pre my Rolex collection as a Submariner being my grail. Now post 20+ Rolexes in & out over the years my grail is a Patek annual or perpetual calendar as the finish line definitely moves.

I don’t believe in grail watches generally speaking.
I’d rather have variety YMMV |

Ask why you'd want to own a watch, whether it's the grail or other price point. If your reasons for ownership is sound and you have the money, just get it.
Don't buy something simply because it's cheap - especially when it comes to jewelry (aka Watches) as the outlay for even a "cheap quartz" is substantial and a small percentage of a more expensive, more desirable watch. This is ultimately a "heart" over "logic" hobby so do it like Capt. Jack Sparrow. Whip out your compass and go with what you desire the most ! |

I’d get the grail and at least 2 other “lesser” watches unlike the grail for other occasions. My minimum is below:
One nice sports/diver/chrono One for dressier occasions One beater for traveling so I don’t have to worry about having to make a “is it safe” post |

I've reached a point where I would love to be a one watch person, but I can't stop looking and wanting.
This year I decided to trade watches for new watches, so the collection doesn't get any larger. I don't miss the old ones, but it hasn't stopped the itch. I'm hoping to settle on 2 watches for the long term. right now I have 5. |

I like the term "Two is one and one is none". My experience with Grail watches is that they are only grails until you acquire them and wear them for a while. With one watch you have the situation that unless you are using a utility watch you will need something else to do other activities. What we are really talking about here is money and how you choose to allocate it for your watch collection. What is wrong with 2 for 25k apiece or one for 40k and another for 10k? Just playing with numbers if the values are the same. For the original question I would rather have a SS Submariner-C ND, a white dial SS Sky-Dweller on Jubilee, A BLRO on jubilee and if you could get a SS Daytona-C at retail. If not, a Omega Speedmaster 3861 on bracelet. These are always fun posts because the perimeters are so open you get a lot of varied responses.

Formerly I would have said I’d rather have multiple watches but once I went PM that went out the window.
However I do think having more than 1 watch is ideal. To me 2-3 is perfect. I’m slowly working up to a perfect collection and enjoying pieces now. |

I like your question OP...got me thinking.
A thing to consider is do you love collecting? The thrill of the chase, the pride in owning a collection. I think many people do, although they may not admit it. Another thing is how you feel wearing a watch of a certain value. For some they feel confident and safe with 50K or more on their wrist. Others may feel self-conscious, wary of theft, or being seen as a show-off. Also, in the UK insuring a watch worth over £20K becomes difficult and expensive, as most home insurance policies have a maximum value limit for each item. May be the same in the US, I don't know. Once you have a watch worth over (for example 20K, or 50K), you may need to have at least one other watch that you feel is more appropriate to wear openly when travelling, or in the company of strangers, or with friends you don't want to over-flex with. |

I think it depends on what your "Grail" watch is...will it be able to be your only watch...water resistance, dress vs casual...can it do it all? I would prefer to have a smaller collection that I can rotate pieces to accommodate the occasion.
