"Yeah, well my $10.99 Timex..... "
We had a discussion about this last year, but I'm thinking some more opinions now would be good. I have to say that I'm stealing Nikos (GreekBum) post from the "In House Movement" thread, (we Helenics need to stick together right Nikos ), hopefully you won't mind.
Nikos was minding his own business when a stranger came up and asked if his watch was a Rolex, and invaribly the next question, was it real. When Nikos responde affirmative to both questions, the guy holds up a Timex he got from Walmart and exhaults the virtues of how his $10.99 Times is such a better watch then Nikos Rolex. Let me state most strongly, this is NOT a thread to, nor do I EVER, make fun of or look down at a person that chooses to purchase and use a 10 dollar watch. I respect everyone's decision. If someone is proud of their Timex/Casio/Rado (yeah, I threw that last one in for JJ ), and it meets their needs, I support and respect their decision 100%. I ALWAYS compliment someone on their watch, even if it is the ugliest thing I've ever seen, we are all entitled to our own likes and dislikes. This is not about money either. We all spend what our budgets allow on timepieces; (except in my case, when I go way overboard my budget for a Rolex... but that's a whole other story). And I sincerely respect someone that purchases a timex/casio etc. because that is all they can afford. What happened to Nikos and what simply INFURIATES me is the Beepety Beep that chastises one of us for making the choice of spending a great deal of money on a fine timepiece when it won't keep as accurate time as a 10 dollar quartz. I respect that person for making the choice to only spend that much on a watch, and compliment him on it, and am glad it meets his needs, WHY do they feel the need to belittle someone that made a totally different decision? I guess another question I have is: How do you respond? I know what I would have LIKED to do to that moron, a swift head-but delivered concurrently with a kick in the oranges, but Nikos handled it a lot more mature then I would have and simply laughed. Good job Nikos! Anyway, I'll stop ranting... but I just don't understand, I never make fun of someone that has chosen to purchase and wear an inexpensive watch, why do so many of them feel they must chastize us for making our choices? And how do you react to those Moro- er... people? |

Ela re Paul ti kanis? The best way to handle this I think is just laugh and enjoy the moment with the malaka that says it.Its all gonna stay here when we die.I havn't found a person that knows how to take it with him to the next place we go.We make money to spend it and enjoy it.Some people dont have any money to enjoy these things. Some people have so much money but think its not enough and never enjoy these things so whos to judge?I have found the best way to handle the situation when someone compares or try's to make you feel guilty or dumb for spending your money is to just laugh with them.BTW the guy today when I left I said see ya Boss-man (Katalaves ti Chroma etana)and he had a smile from ear to ear.He felt like a Rolex too.....................LOL

They will never understand and it simply wastes your time to do anything other than laugh.
Some people hang tasteful framed art in their house, some people staple a poster on the wall.

I think that is a big part of it also. Can see no other, logical reason as to why it would bother them so much. Different strokes for different folks, all there is to it. Some people who make a lot of money have no interest in expensive cars, watches etc etc. Just a question of prefrence and personality, sadly those ignorant / jealous folks can not partially understand this... I never let them stop me from enjoying what makes me happy, that is for sure |

It's the same with music systems.
"My £399 Pioneer sounds just as good as that''. You just smile and say ''of course it does''.

I had this happen to me once while I was wearing my Datejust. My uncle joked that his however-many-dollar Casio did the same thing that my Rolex did if not better. I simply informed him that my Rolex was 21 years old and that I would reexamine his Casio in 21 years to see if it is still doing as good as my Rolex.

Why do you feel the need to understand the thought process of someone who wears a ten dollar watch and staples posters on their apartment wall? Simply accept that that is the way their mind works. I'd guess subconsciously they are jealous.

I think ignorance can play a role too. I am certain there are people that believe Rolex is just clever marketing...

I Often find people who make those comments think nothing of spending hundreds of bucks a month in the pub, personally I would rather spend that on something that last more than the length of time the other takes to pee out of me
Thing is with someone like that, you are never going to convince them the merits of spending large amounts on a watch so I just do not bother! I tend to just walk away and save the precious oxygen it would have taken to argue the toss with him! |

Yeah, cheaper things can cost more in the long run. A $70.00 G-Shock every year or how ever often, plus the hastle make it not even worth the trouble but that is just my opinion or outlook. Not to mention it is nice to assumulate some assets or one of the few things we can keep our entire lives to remind us of good times in the past, and even give them to the next generation... |

"I don't understand what makes that watch worth several thousand dollars, and I would never pay that much for an item that simply tells the time, but if it makes you happy, congratulations and enjoy it." I don't expect any non WIS to understand why we love fine timepieces so much, but they don't have to be an ignoramous %#$!^!$ like the one that spoke to Nikos, (trying to) make him feel belittled. |

It's not only a matter of being jealous of thing you can't afford, IMHO.
How may times, wearing my suit english shoes, I have had to argue that a €40 pair of shoes it's by no means the same thing of my Church's or Trickers? Countless, even with educated and affluent friends or colleagues. Simply, a lot of people will not undestand that there's value beyond the mere "usefulness" of things and that I may decide to discover and enjoy this value... After all, we could feed on a simple diet of beans, water and a little more, keeping good health, but I do prefer a $ 100 good bottle of Barolo, along with a good serve of risotto con i funghi, prepared by me, as long as I can afford it! |

I've had the opportunity to listen to a very expensive Linn system (not mine, my best friend's brother's) which cost him about £10K in the mid 90s and compare it to his £300 system made up from NAD, Mission and Panasonic, which he had not yet broken down. I'll fully accept my ears may not be the best attuned but I personally could not tell where that £9,700 went. If we're all saying, which I hope we are, that there are different strokes for different folks - that's fine. But to my mind "inverse snobbery" is just as bad as the real thing. We're all privileged to own the watches we do, many of us having saved for years, so let's go easy on the Timex guys and not become too upset if they have a go because of our choices.

If they don't get it they don't get it. Not besides the fact that the Timex is more accurate and has a 10 year battery life these days. They are not switched on to the mechanical excellence of a Patek or my old Mitchell Orbe DC Turntable.

Saying to the guy . . .
Can you imagine the difference between a $10 pair of trousers and a $100 pair of trousers? Comfort, durability, style. For $10, one usually gets a tacky, uncomfortable watch. If it suits your needs, I'm happy for you. You might get a better watch spending $40 or so, for a used watch that might cost $100-$200 new. And for five or six hundred, one can get a really nice watch. And for ten times that, you can have the best. It's the same thing between a $7000 car and a $70,000 car. Ever been in a $70,000 car? You'd never want to leave. |

It's funny you should mention if some cares about your watch status, in my humble opinion it's compliment for some one to say nice watch or is that a Rolex your wearing .
I guess i never had to deal with people of jealousy all my life because i surround and only are bothered with positive friends and family members, but i have run across a few pepole who thinks this guy must be a rich snob or something. So if you have a 10 dollar watch or 5,000,000 watch it dosen't matter, you make the watch, the watch does not make you. I have an empolyee who wears a casio to work every single day and this woman has so much class that the watch dosen't even matter, class is a state of mind not the clothes or cars and watches you own . Take it from me i have been blessed to have what i have all my life and if anything i would probably go half with a sincere person if i knew this is what they wanted just to see them happy. I have that kind of spirit and energy, now that's class |

Well, unless I know the person, I avoid any references to my Rolex for
my personal security (safety) reasons. It just may turn ugly. So, I just say, "No, it's a fake that I bought in China Town, New York City".

The guy is obviously insecure. I meet people like that quite often. It's usually not worth making a retort to an obviously stupid and insulting comment.

I get the same thing when people at work ask "why I spend so much money on a watch, when a Timex can do the same thing with tons more functions." I simply say
A. Because I can, or B. I love watches, and watches is my hobby (not that it's any of their business anyway). I agree with most of the other posters though. Most people will never understand why us crazy WIS people spend so much money on a watch. And, they most likely never will. I'll just leave it at that. |
