Over the years I slowly built a hobby related business and it's been gangbusters throughout the recession. Been at it for 20 years and April '09 was out best month ever. I'm blessed and don't take one minute of my good fortune for granted.

No debt, money in the bank, buying undervalued stocks and Rolex watches. Life is good.

We are retired but funds are short.... IRA's are a joke (lost 40/45 percent)
cant sell house etc....life sucks at the moment....but most people will agree that 75/ 80
percent of us are hurting right now.

Things are ok, healthcare has been somewhat unaffected (for now). While I am doing well, I do not see myself picking up anymore watches.

I would just like to inject something upbeat into this thread. My wife and I are retired, and all is well with us. We are NOT underwater in our mortgage (only a few years left on it anyway), we have NO other debt of any kind, we own both of our cars outright, we have already recouped any losses to our 403(b)s incurred during the recession (the money has now been rolled over into IRAs that are NOT in the market), we have a one-year-plus emergency fund, and our income during retirement is more than we were making working.

We empathize with everyone who has had a tough time during this downturn, and we are very thankful for everything!

The amount of our wealth that went to "money heaven" was startling but we carry no debt other than a modest mortgage and a low car note and the job is sound so all okay.

The stock market rebound has been nice but we really need strong retail sales this holiday season to keep the momentum moving and for that many more people will need to get employed and/or feel secure in the jobs they have.

I stay safe because I save like a packrat and live way below my means. All the nice stuff I have I pay cash for.

Apart from the hit on my pension investments I'm fine. Don't panic because what happens now, this is all a matter of 'the long haul'. My company is still doing OK with a healthy profit margin. And thus I'm still doing OK. We try to keep enough savings to cope with anything unexpected but still this is modest. But our motto stays the same: live now, worry later

I got golden-handcuffs (3 yr deal) 1 yr ago which pay out 20/20/40 right through the worst of this recession...... it WAS going towards a tt p-car...... it NOW is going towards House Principle

If things don't improve I'd rather have my house knocked down VS a depreciating shiny (albiet fun) p-car ;)

This was a good learning experience for my family......
1. There IS such a thing as a bubble.....
2. I am NOT a genius investor who can make 30%/yr with my "dart-throw" single equity picks..... (I thought I was :) :) :) .....
3. I DO need to balance my portfolio with cash/realestate/equities etc..... and not just own stocks ;) :) :)
4. I DO NOT need a TT-Pcar ........

but I'd sure look good in one :)

No serious watch shopping..... but I do want a TT DJ Stick Dial so bad I can taste it.

Bad that I lost $$$ in the market, good that I kept on investing and buying low.....we will see how it plays out in the next year or two........

Been doing rather good in the stock market only because I've through enough recessions to know that typically 6 months after a major decline in the market, the market will come back 50%. I believe the market is up 48% in 8 months. Now expecting a pullback and the easy money is done. The next couple of years will be a stock pickers market if any decent returns are expected.

Recently graduated and started work the next day. I can't really say I've cut back on purchases - but my Vegas trips are getting more costly every month

My employer posted 16 million lost in second quarter, so we had to swallow a 15% mandatory paycut (corporate wide). I am thankful to God that I didn't lose my job because the parking lot is now always half empty (it used to be full).

In the mean time, I want to celebrate the recession by getting my first Rolex :) cheers.

btw my portfolio is earning decent though. I am just 28 and took some risks, and they are paying off nicely atm.
