Rolex already had it right!

Yesterday I took a little trip to my local AD to change up my GMT II from the blue/red to the solid black. On the way, I could not help but think how Rolex already had the perfect watch, it does not get any better than the classic GMT's. I used to own a couple of GMT's, one pepsi and a coke, and I also had a spare black insert, I was set. Some how I have ended up with just my pepsi, and I even sold my solid black insert . I'm not really sure what happened, I do have a serious flipping problem. Anyway, the pepsi insert is tucked away and now I will have a hard time taking this one off my wrist. Seriously, this is a perfect watch, super comfortable on the wrist, ability to change the inserts, and it can take anything I throw at it. This GMT even spends hours a day in the pool without any worries, I used to think I had to wear my sub for that.

I ran outside today to take some pics., and I am really thinking that the solid black might be my very favorite GMT combo, what do you think?

No offence to the new breed of ceramic lovers, but Rolex took a big jump backwards when they let this baby die.

I know it would be silly to manufacture all of them, but I must agree. Same goes for the Submariner, much as I like the new version in SS or YG.

Great looking watch you have there, hope you wear it in good health. However, the new GMT is, for me, the perfect modern Rolex

For me the blue/red bezel is part of the appeal of the GMT - it reinforces the 24 hour nature of the watch's functionality and it looks fantastic. For me that blue/red bezel is part of the identity of the GMT.

That said, I can see the appeal of being able to change the bezel.

I like the ceramic bezels but I am looking at the deep sea. I like that it is so different from the other watches but still shares so much of the Rolex design heritage.

There are enough Rolex designs for all of us.

Enjoy!

If Rolex decides to release a red/blue "Pepsi" Cerachrom bezel for the current GMT-II, I'll run to my nearest AD and put my name on a list. I love the color infusion of this bezel on the older GMTs, but I also love the new features of the current GMT.

Having said that, the all black bezel looks sharp on the older GMTs

But won't that look odd with the green 24hr hand and green writing on the dial? I think a green/black bezel might look interesting.

Agreed - that's why I should have mentioned a red 24 hour hand and red writing on the dial. I've seen a mockup of it on the web somewhere. It looked amazing.

Having a two tone sub with silver serti dial is something I never thought I would own. I have been dreaming of my next watch. I think it will have to be a GMT. I don't care of it is a new style or an older one. I am really floored by the 18KT gold anniversary edition with the green dial but, for me, that may not be a financial reality. However, a two tone will probably be within my reach, especially preowned. And the black dial and black/gold bezel is my choice.

GMT FOR ME!

Congrats on your GMT and wear it in the best of health.

Can't we all get along? New and old?

I love the old GMT's. I want a pepsi 16710 so bad!

BTW, karmatp, the black bezel looks killer!

I was thinking about this a little more, and to me, what would have made sense is to simply add another line of watches, a "Sport" line to go along with the Oyster Perpetual line (DJ, DD, OP, AK, etc) and the Professional line.

The professional line could have included the Explorer, Explorer II, Sub no-date and GMT II with classic bezel colors, while the sport line could have included the Sub Date Ceramic, GMT III (really would have made more sense to call it that, IMO), Daytona, Milgaus, Deep Sea, Yacht Master and Yacht Master II. One set you can really beat the crap out of, the other is more of a leisure and lifestyle item (with precious metals, ceramic bezels and polished center links).

The Professional line could have been made available in steel only, with the only variations being the dial color on the Explorer II and the bezel colors on the GMT. Four simple, classic, purpose-built watches which have withstood the test of time, and don't need to be changed because they just work. And for the customer whose eye wanters to shiny objects, the sport line could include pieces for the more luxury-oriented customer who wants both fancy and rugged.

Just my $.02

Could not agree more, Trevor. Recently went all black myself. Every classic GMT owner should have all three inserts as each has it's own personality.

Danny, you have my vote, now go run Rolex will you please. Could you imagine if you could still buy all the classic models, that would be fantastic.

To add: given my way, I might bring back the Jubilee as an option on the GMT. While not my choice of bracelets, a Pepsi GMT II on a Jubilee always looked pretty sweet. It would be the original style Jubilee, not the new hidden clasp version.
