Deciding On First Rolex

Hi all! First timer in watches and debating between what to purchase. I’ve developed decent rapport with my local AD. I am a bigger dude (above 6 foot 200 pounds) but have a modest wrist size of 6.5 inches. Was debating between a ym 40 in blue or the ND submariner 41. Which of the two should I go with? Anything else I should consider?

Both very nice watches. Your wrist size will accommodate both nicely with no issue. I’d personally go 124060 - simple, elegant. PCLs are something to commit to. No such commitment required with brushed sub bracelets.

A Submariner is always a great first choice. A classic watch with a great history, very iconic. Try it on and do the mirror test to see how it looks from a third angle. Welcome to TRF and good luck in your choice. Cheers

Welcome to the forum.

Ask for both - buy whatever comes in first.

Then the other one next.

Try them both on. They are very different. The YM is more svelte and I think more stylish, the sub is more bit rugged and “tooly”.

Postpone a purchase until you ache for one more than the other.

For your first? Gentle and easy. Submariner 124060.

You’ll probably be offered the YM first though

Both are amazing watches to have. The ND Submariner might be easier to get as your first piece!

Yeah, I’d say express interest in both and see what comes first. Hard to go wrong with a Sub though, for me the Sub is just the archetypal sports watch and I couldn’t be happier with my 126610. The Sub is an iconic reference point in the watch world for a reason, but I also understand to some that can be a negative as well. YM will definitely be less common.

They are such different looks that my suggestion would be to give it a bit more time and reflect or . . . just express interest and see what appears first. Both are great.

I’m a big YM fan, although I’ve never owned one. However it’s tough to beat the classic Sub - particularly as your first. When I got a call out of the blue to go and pick my 114 up, that was a special experience.

Which matches your lifestyle better? If you are always in a suit and tie, the YM is a solid choice. If you are generally dressed more casually, the ND Sub is the better choice. The Sub can be dressed up or down. In general, for a first Rolex, I’d go Sub, if I were a guy. Good luck! Let the wait begin.

def a sub first, whether its a nd sub or an explorer most of us have a 3 hander, might as well make it a sub - like women you always remember your first rolex, make it count.

I didn’t know that 6”+ @200lb puts me into the “bigger dude” category. Dang.
Be that as it may. I’m a fan of 40mm or less, though I’m happy wearing a Speedmaster at 42 also. For divers I think the five digit watches are peak Rolex. Proportions are off on the new ones, especially with a wrist on the smaller side.

Take whichever piece is available/offered first. Then obey the whispering voice in your head compelling you to buy the other one. You cannot resist the force.

The YM is more interesting imho. The Sub is more mainstream and probably a safer bet. Downside is that you see them everywhere

If you want them equally, buy the first available. If you don't know what you want, keep looking. At some point you'll meet a watch that you must have, regardless of what anybody else thinks. That's the watch you'll own. All the best with it.
