Rolex bashing-hate
As I have stated we live in the Woodlands....a upper middle class to rich "township" north of Houston. Today the HEB opened at noon and I was buying some ice cream and junk food ....the lines are long from the storm. The man behind me says "I see you fell for the Rolex hype" huh ? what? I had on my DJ 36 mm TT I've had for 15th years or longer. I told him I buy what I like....he kept on about real watch collectors bypass Rolex for higher end brands ....well maybe its true but I like Rolex and some Omega because they make ladies watches. I walk to the parking lot and he is parked about 3 cars from me....I'm in my 2021 Jeep GC....I could not help myself ....I told him "I see you fell for the Audi hype...." I don't want to ruffle Audi owners feathers but I would never buy one....my family comes from U.S. auto workers.....mostly MOPAR...dad retired after 32 years in 84.
He gives me a shocked look....I told him yeah I'm old but I would bet I'm a better car tinkerer than you...my dad taught me since I was 5..... he drove off without a word. Back to the question why the Rolex hate? please excuse my spelling I'm using the phone.....my internet connection is still down and my old eyes cant see the small print well. |

Just sounds like a classless, tactless individual. Also, most people who would use that type of insult (skipping Rolex for “higher end brands”) are those who know a little but think they know a lot. Common problem. Couple that with envy…

Sounds like a fun time to me. i usually just smile like a Cheshire Cat and move along.
PS: He drives an Audi, and so punishment has been served. :)

Good come back about the Audi. I find that I have no interest in the more high brow brands, the big 3 in particular. I like what Rolex makes. I like Omega too. I like Seiko and lots of other mid level brands. According to that guy, I’m not a real collector, I guess. That’s O. K. with me. The only people who even notice what I’m wearing are my friends and family, who know I’m into watches. My kids call me “WatchMa”.

I would have just told him
“the watch is fake. What crazy idiot would spend that much money on a watch!!”

I never got that from anyone. Most people don’t know I have a Rolex on. The ones that do appreciate quality watches. Maybe he is on a waiting list! Got to be careful in today’s world. I am the first person to give it right back and my wife reminds me you don’t know how people will respond or what they are capable of. Plus I don’t always like to admit I am wearing a Rolex in public with all the theft.

I've always received compliments RE my Sub and always thank to person commenting/complimenting. That said, I occasionally get $hit about my Range Rover Sport and BMW motorcycles. To those twits I simply smile and walk/drive/ride away. I appreciate quality items and prefer to own things you don't see all the time and enjoy my Speedy, too.

Rolex are a thinking persons luxury watch. The only reason there is so much hype is that above all else, they are good watch. They do watch stuff well, they look good, are very comfortable and retain their value well.
The other day I saw a person drive by in a new Corvette and some kids yelled something about wasting all that money on a car. Are they serious? A 70K mid-engine sports car that can absolutely spank cars costing 5 times more, run reliably for 200K miles and get the oil changed at Jiffy Lube. They are also an excellent value proposition. |

People like that aren't worth a comeback. Too bad that I'm human and wouldn't have been able to stop myself from saying something.

All I wanted was some HEB lemon cookie ice cream....we were so happy the power came on....not to get into a debate on why AP is better than Rolex.....he had on a AP RO which is a nice watch true but more money than I would ever pay....way out of my pay scale...maybe if I was a surgical nurse back in the day.

You ran into a classless person. Best is that ignore, “ I don’t discuss my personal items with strangers”.

A two toned 36mm DJ is probably my favorite Rolex. I’d consider it in 2024 to be one of the more humble representations of the brand.

I would have said “I’ve had it over 15 years” and turned away.
I guess I’m a heathen but there’s no AP or Patek that I desire. |

Kinda sounds like he said something about your watch and you said something about his car. How is both conducts any different? Instead of rising above it you doubled down to that level of idiotic behavior. Your from Texas, a “Well bless your heart” would have been sufficient if you felt the need to comment.

Right on! It's stupid comments like that from people that I just don't understand... like how is that at all supposed to come across as NOT condescending. Move along, pal. Love that you got the last word, OP.

Why would someone speak like that to a complete stranger?
If someone said that to me I’d simply look them up and down and call them a prick. Spot on with the Audi come back though, they are the most boring of the German brands…well played sir |

Likely another guy that was told no at an AD, or, isn’t a watch guy and finds the amount we spend to be absurd. I have no time for them.

This! Once, the smokin' hot girl at the mall trying to sell me some kiosk crap as I walked by grabbed my wrist and got in real close to my hand and then commented on my Rolex. I told her it was fake. She looked shocked. I told her I couldn't afford a real one...and that her $30 Dead Sea salt was too expensive.

Dude wants to talk about hype, while wearing AP RO??
OP's car comment was spot on. That's what we call "Checkmate"

I’d have just nodded and moved on with my day. Commenting on his car means you have now stooped to his level.

HEB is a great grocery store. Sorry that some people are jerks... it just isn't worth your time trying to figure them out.
Also, I trust that the ice cream you bought was Blue Bell! Cheers! |
