I love it.
I don't see how this would affect the functionality of a Sub, unless the Sapphire flexed under pressure. Rolex should offer this from the factory. I enjoy looking at machinery, and it would also make it easier to identify fakes if all Rolex watches came with clear case backs. |

Like others said, it would look better on certain references but not on the sports models imo.

For the average person, there is no reason why this clear caseback should not be an option.
But in terms of oyster cases and Rolex uncompromising tradition and history of tool watches the steel caseback is necessary. Say for example you need an anvil in the survival situation, a crystal caseback is not going to do the job, but stainless steel This is a bit far fetched I have to admit.

Love it! Why look at a piece of flat steel (or Ti on the Deepsea's case) when you can see the heartbeat of your watch, and all the beautiful little pieces working in harmony to keep time with a few seconds a day. Its like seeing the magic.
I had this same maker do a custom caseback for a Speedmaster I had. He does good work. |

I wouldn't mind a clear caseback at all.

I installed one of the sapphire backs from Germany on an EXP II. I liked being able to see the 3186 movement.
Recently, I sold the watch to a member of this forum. The watchmaker at my Rolex AD changed it back to the original in less than 5 minutes. For me, this modification is no different than changing the bracelet or bezel insert. |

I think it'll look great on a Daytona, GMT, Datejust, President and Exp, but certainly not on the Subs or Sea-dwellers.

The jury's still out on the display back for my EXPII:
I've still not become accustomed to the feel of the new back and its extra weight. The EXPII is so comfortable with the original back and there is nothing exciting about the view of the 3186 movement so I may reverse the mod. The display back for my Omega SMP should arrive in a day or so which will provide a view of the nicely finished cal. 1120 movement. But here again, the SMP is quite comfortable with the steel back but hopefully the view will justify the change. Fr. John† |

Blasphemy please! The movement is what makes it tick, lets see it. It is added aesthetic value. Those who say it is not Rolex or it is somehow unbecoming lets talk about jewel gobbed animal print monstrosities. As for tool watches lets talk about anything making a tool watch with any gold on it. Opinions are great and that is what makes this board great but judging taste and personal preference is a dicey game.

Blasphemy.
There's nothing to look at, in my opinnion. You look at the dial of the watch.
