Has the CPO program increased buying prices?

Prior to the CPO, I know a lot of AD’s already built in service costs to their buying prices (which were already low). However, the CPO program now increased the already way too high prices that these dealers were charging to sell pre owned watches. So, has anyone noticed or found that they’re paying more to buy pre owned pieces than before?

Thus far I've only noticed the plethora of available CPO pieces not being sold.

Private sellers (non gray) seem to be going considerably lower.

Some gray dealers have held firm, with maybe a slight uptick for the really hot pieces. Though several greys seem to have gotten the memo.

CPO may turn out to be a great way to get older, non-production models. But an awful way to get anything current. Such that the prices may do more to deter possible purchasers.

CPO pricing may find equilibrium with reality if they sit in display cases un purchased

CPO is a joke. They aren’t selling. Prices will fall eventually.

Most CPO models that I have handled, quite a few, are missing bracelet links and some are over polished, most are priced high. But they are selling. I would never buy one.

Agree, but I think CPO will still succeed. The potential buyers they’re targeting are less careful with their money, less knowledgable about the product and prices, and are attracted the safety of buying a “certified” used watch from an authorized dealer.

That was me a few years ago, only willing to buy pre owned from an AD. But now things are different and the cost benefit to the CPO route isn’t there.

I feel like I live under a rock. Very interesting. I had no idea Rolex was a CPO. My Rolex is from the late 80's and my wife Rolex is from the early 90's.

I like the CPO concept to a point, serviced and carded so there’s some reassurance, the pricing is way off on some models, a couple I’ve seen are ok, but what gets me is I ask for a bluesy, AD says no but you can have exact model but not tear and way over MRSP .. that is bonkers , Hulk and my old frog friend Kermit would be worth thinking about but some prices I’ve seen are a joke … I do believe prices will subside ..

I saw a lot of CPO at WOS on regent st in London while we were there. They did look over polished. Maybe they are already polished prior?

The CPO program is for a specific group of buyers and sellers. Which most of us are not. There are a lot of people who really don't care about a few thousand dollars and if they are tired of watch, would rather just do a swap at an AD

Yep. People still have money and still want Rolex. Some will dig in and research others will just get ROLEX no matter what.

Yes and that is a watch that can be had around msrp or even below for used. Prices are a joke and I was initially excited for this programme it’s turned into an own goal for the brand imho. Wouldn’t touch most cpo with a barge pole.

CPO boosted the Grey Market and is helping to keep prices up. Most AD's are charging ridiculous prices in the CPO program from what I have seen. Very specific customer for CPO.

I agree. $28,000 for a hulk. $14000 for 1O yr old exp 2’s. $58,000 for a WG Daytona. Saw a blk gmt2 ceramic for $18000. 3 missing links. Of course no original box and papers.

Like my AD has said to me, these watches aren’t for you. But they are selling them fast

My AD just finally opened the CPO mid June and they are selling like hot cakes. Already sold 2 1165 Daytonas for over 30k. So far the investment seems to be going pretty well for them

In July-August of '23, I traded a 114060 (bought in January 2018 for $7500 NIB) for $8500credit, and a 116610 (bought in May 2019 for $8550 NIB) for $9500 credit, to buy a NIB 126710 BLNR, and a NIB VTNR. I also got credit for sales tax. My AD had always offered used Rolex watches, and was becoming a CPO approved dealer.
I thought it was a good deal for me, I sold my watches full set, tags, box, warranty cards links, in good condition. They seemed happy with the deal at the time. Of course, the market has weakened since then.

I think it depends a lot on the model - in Switzerland, the turnover for ceramic GMTs, post 2010 subs and esp. 116520 daytonas is super high

Btw I should have been clearer, buying prices as in what the AD’s offering CPO are paying for the pieces. Not the effect on buying prices for secondary dealers.

Not at my AD. But it’s a thriving market. He’s selling 30 Cartiers a week on average and 5 IWC’s which surprised me. People just come in and purchase. They want a Rolex, the boutique won’t sell them one, so they go over to them and just pay up.

I’m surprised to read they’re selling well. When looking at Tourneau’s online offerings, they all seemed to be there for a while. But maybe they turnover and get replaced regularly.

Wow, interesting. By the photos they look pretty good. Wouldn’t have guessed they would sell them with missing links given the high prices in CPO.

I’ll second this. Many of CPO models I’ve seen were poor examples. But buyers are ignorant. That’s what the CPO program relies on: ignorance.

I'm really surprised about the missing links. I thought these were supposed to be restored to "nearly new" or something. I wouldn't expect a CPO car to be missing some of the parts it was delivered with. Like the owner decided to keep the stereo and the dealership didn't replace it...
