What happened to that guy who was going to chronicle his journey to getting a Daytona?

Didn't he seem to think he could get one quickly? Maybe he did and I missed it.

I was lucky to get my stainless Daytona white dial 116500 when first released in 2016 from my AD in southern California. After I received the white dial version, I told my AD I wanted to get the black dial one too. The AD also sells diamonds, rings and other jewelry. I have bought 5 other Rolexes from him in the past 20 years.

I have been waiting 8 years to get the black dial version and have come to realize it probably won't happen. According to the AD, if a customer drops 50-100K on jewelry in a year and he calls the AD requesting a Daytona, he feels obligated to sell the watch to that customer. I understand this because I am an occasional buyer and never buy jewelry from him.

I refuse to pay the gray market price and am grateful I have the white dial 116500 and that I held on to my stainless black dial Daytona 116520 also.

Bottom line: New Daytona unobtainable unless you want to pay double through gray market. No thanks!

I know right. Secondhand pricing for a SS Daytona is bonkers... Rolex HQ should open more factories to increase supply of all those popular watches and that way no more waiting AD games and etc.

Don't believe in faith, believe in odds. Your odds are slim to none at an AD unless you have a very strong purchase history. Also understand that a white Daytona is instant cash for anyone that obtains one from an AD as they sell for $34K on the grey market.

Bought 3 watches from my AD, some
Jewelry, as well as have had my others service and polished by them. Crickets when it comes to hearing from them when it comes to my request over 2 years old … sad. Will likely never purchase from them again, but I do still like their service dept.

This is my way to get a Daytona at my AD - first watch bought in 2021.

BLNR > G/S Daytona White dial > D-Blue > Submariner No Date > Tudor FXD > Daytona G/S Black dial - Submariner Date Green Bezel > GMT VTNR > and then finally the steel Daytona with black dial and the day after that purchase an Airking for my dad lol

I turned down the steel before. I get it though. But my point is the way the AD experience was described is not something I would accept. Find multiple ADs in multiple locations if you can and build those relationships with the ones who treat you like a respectable human being.

I have a decent spend history with my local AD over the past 5 years and they told me 2 years. Not sure they know - and I would expect the time to be less now than it has been in the past. It took 2 years for me to get the VTNR and it just arrived in January. Stay tuned and good luck!

Most likely you won’t be getting one from the AD if you have to ask

Honestly, if d just at buy a nice Speedmaster or two and enjoy the nicer watches. Seems like Rolex is dead set on letting this kind of stuff happen and ship watches only to the “emerging economies” and let third party dealers run crooked schemes around tennis bracelets and such.
Without a defined wait list it seems better to just move on. And no, I would not pay “grey market” prices for anything.

Spot on even though this OF might be my favorite and it's a great watch but can't compare to getting a SS Daytona availablity. Only OF I know that is a bit tougher in current line up is YG with solid black subdials.
