If I recall correctly, it’s never been more than 2% of the value of the watch. I would always have the HTS codes with me.

It really depends on the agent and how they calculate the breakdown. This is why Ive always had the codes and what I think the appropriate % for each readily available.

Can you share what HTS code you use? I did a search and found this, but seems quite a bit more than what code you’re using.

HTS Code 9102.21.70 (Wristwatches with automatic winding, other than those of precious metal):
General Duty Rate: 9.8% on the case, movement, and strap/bracelet/band if all are imported together.
Additional duties may apply if the watch has additional features or if it's classified differently.

HTS Code 9101.21.30 (Wristwatches of precious metal, with mechanical movements):
General Duty Rate: 5.3% on the entire value of the watch.
If the watch contains jewels, additional duties may apply based on the number and type of jewels.

Seeing many questions on the tax refund amount and process. Will respond to everyone once the process is finalized and money hit my account. ;)

21% refund? that's crazy.

do you need to pay tax at custom when you come back?

Congratulations!!! It's beautiful. And you have very good taste in watches. I picked up the exact same reference from my AD in February.

Tax free is the future. I bought the black dialled version of this duty free from my AD in April, just had to fly in/out of the country to avoid 15% tax - win win - i buy all my watches this way.

Few folks asked for an update, so posting final numbers.
Cost of watch in Spain - $38k
Final tax refund from Global Blue - $5.65k (they took about $1k for their fees which is a ripoff IMO)
Final cost after tax refund - $32.35k

Given the average state sales tax of around 7% this watch can be purchased in US for around $38.85k right now, so total savings are approximately $6.5k or 16-17% which is quite good IMO.
