Saw a TT root beer GMT master on oyster in the wild at CosCo and ....

when I asked the older gentleman if "that was a GMT Master", he looked at it and said, "No, it's a Rolex" and kept walking.

And there it is; hard evidence that most folks buy because they have the means, not necessarily because they know what they are looking at.

I can hear the conversation during the sale .....

Him: "Let me see that brown one."

Sales: "Are you asking about the GMT Master with root-beer dial?"

Him: "No, that brown Rolex there. Bob has one like it, but his only has two hands, and the face is silver. I want this one because it looks more expensive ...."

Sales: "How would you like to pay for this?"

Cheers!
Bill

It's really none of my business... but stories like that just irk the heck out of me... it's like they should pass a law... people that don't appreciate their fine timepieces enough to even know the fricken name should have them confiscated.

That's nothing. Last weekend I was in a jewelry store where a guy wearing a GMT was looking at a Baume and Mercier and couldn't figure out why the Baume and Mercier wasn't working (i.e. he didn't understand the concept of an automatic watch).

I'm sure as long as he remembers to replace the battery every couple years his GMT works fine.

One of our VP's is the son of the former owner. (I know amazing isn't it?) I've not spoken to the guy but I know who he is. He knows I work for the company and has seen me around. I saw he had on a PAM88 the other day. I caught him alone in the hall and mentioned that I really like the 88 and it was on my list of watches. He looked at me like I had 3 heads. I pulled back my shirt cuff and showed him my 251 daylight and smiled and said that I got this one instead.

He looked horrified. I really think he:
1. Had no idea what kind of watch he had on, only that it was expensive.
2. Could not believe that one of the little people had on the same brand watch.
3. He could not believe that I somehow might have a "better" watch than his.

I was at the strap and batteries counter the other day .....

and the young gal asked me, "do you need a battery change?" I was wearing my GMT Master II and said, "No, thank you". I thought to myself, "I don't wear quartz, honey!"

Had a meet with a client today. He was wearing a very new looking TT GMT II. I had trouble looking him in the eye. It was as bad as talking to a client with big, round, tanned, bubbly breasts.

Trouble is I was quoting the job, so couldn´t mention it, cos then he would think that I knew he had money... LOL

I strategically hid mine...

How do you now notice the text GMT MASTER on a dial you've probably looked at 1000 times? I guess they just stop at 'Rolex' huh?
