I think Xenophone has answered the query on the crown, and the one in the picture is the mid-size bought in 2004. It was only in 2005 or 2006 that the TT came out in a full-sized version, hence the one I ought had to be 'mid'.... Unfortunately I'll have to sell this one soon.... |

I've spent a lot of time working with Sat divers in the North Sea, on most of the DSV's therein, and can assure you that many of the older divers do or at least have worn their SD's whilst working. |

I'm actually trying to save up for one. It'll take me a while but after seeing it in person and trying it on, I think it's worth every penny!

OK, so I'm seeing a lot of talk about what makes the YMII a "Yacht-friendly" watch (regatta timing, etc...) but I've often wondered what makes the original YM a "yacht-friendly" watch.
Early disclosure time - I just closed a deal on a new 40 mm SS/Platty and will be taking delivery late this week (I plan on calling it my KnottyPlattyYachtty) and have been adoring the YM for years but other than the bi-directional bezel, what differentiates it from a Sub in terms of function? The Sub has the depth rating to give it the divers claim... what's the Yachttys schtick? Besides being the stone-cold fox of the Rolex lineup that is! m. |

I always wished the SS/Plat YM came with the white dial available on the 18k and SS/18k version. I don't love the monochromatic look of the current rendition.

Just seen on the news that owner Mike Slade of ICAP Leopard has just taken line honours at the 2009 Fastnet Race and been presented with a Rolex Yachtmaster watch.....

I had lunch with a friend the other day and he had on a YMII in two tone stainless steel. He said it was new and expensive and he had just go it. I did not have the heart to tell him I knew it was a fake since the YMII does not come in stainless steel.

Yachtie fans may find this interesting: at a party last night, yachties outnumbered all other rollies. There were 2 people wearning platty YMs out of about 25 guys. One guy was wearing a tt blue sub, one was wearing a datejust, and one had on a tt daytona. First time I've ever seen yacthies outnumber subs.

In my eyes it's the most underrated watch in the rolex line up, I hope to get the SS/ plat yatchmaster real soon , after i pay some bills.

I have been following this thread with interest as I plan to buy a YM in the next 2 or 3 months. I see a lot of interest in the SS/platinum and the two-tone models, but virtually no mention of the solid 18K. There's a nice one on the For Sale Forum at what seems a very fair price. It's been there for a while and I'm curious why it hasn't sold.
I'm leaning toward the two-tone, but I'm really curious why there aren't more fans of the all-gold YM's. Am I missing something? Best, Skip |

Funny, I was at a different party about a year ago, and I noticed a guy there that I'd seen at a restaurant earlier in the day. The only reason I recognized him was because I noticed his platinum ym at that restaurant and he was now wearing a datejust. He seemed to recognize me also, even though we never actually acknowledged each other at the restaurant. He came up to me and commented on my daytona, then asked where my black sub was that I was wearing that morning. Too funny.

Like the Deepsea, the YM2 has polarised opinion among Rolex lovers. Those who don't like its appearance base their view on a supposedly overcrowded bezel and/or the blue/yellow gold/white colour combo which is seen as too garish. This has led to the watch being called (unfairly, IMHO) the "Clownmaster'' in this forum. Other critics have dismissed the countdown function as being an expensive gimmick that real yachting enthusiasts would rarely use.
All I can say is to each his own. IMO, the YM2 is a handsome and very desirable watch that simply offers customers something different. If Rolex rested on its laurels and didn't bother with innovation or change, Daytonas would still be using the Zenith movement (or even the Valjoux 7750 that was in the originals from the 1960s and 70s), the depth rating of the Subs and SDs wouldn't have increased from the few hundred feet it was back in the 1950s, bracelets would still employ the flimsy Fliplock and there'd be no Glidelock, and....you get the drift. To me, the YM2 contains a new movement and offers a modified appearance over the original YM and so customers now have greater choice. Like the Leopard Daytona, ice-encrusted GMTand Deepsea it might not appeal to everyone's tastes but isn't variety the spice of life? Here's to a (hopefully, more affordable) S/S YM2 sometime soon! |
