I'd go for the black Sub-date - classic, timeless design. Good luck and congrats in advance on getting a gift that will last a lifetime!

OK
I am sorry if this is rude but I think the best thing for a 16 year old is a JOB and if you do REALLY well in school, are polite and help out around the house perhaps a car.

Sorry but when a kid is given these high end luxury items what do they have to look forward to themselves?

Unless the kid comes from a family with enough money where they will never have to work again they are in for a big let down when they get in the real world...

If your parents buy you a Rolex it should be for something major like graduation still most people I know wont give them to their kids till they get into the real world or start grad school.

Off my soap box and now I said my two cents I will leave this thread alone.

The OP did not ask for a sermon on moral values. If there are any more sermonizing posts here, the poster will be "awarded" points and this thread will be closed.

Are we clear about that?

I am sorry, you are right and I apologize to everyone and the OP.

Off all the choices I think the Sub would be my first choice. I think you can wear it the most and is really iconic and perhaps you can pass it on to your children someday.

Save the DD for something like graduation or something as at 16 I doubt you would wear it as much as when you got out of school or something.

I am just not a fan of the AK myself but it is a classic with great history.

Good luck in your choice and please let us know what you end up with and pics are a must! :)

Kyle: forget Rolex, studying is far more important for you right now

I agree, with SATS and Regions coming up, I really have to study. School is getting tougher, and I need to do good.

Your dad seems like quite a man to buy you such an expensive watch. I hope you appreciate it. However IMO a 16 yrd old does not need to be wearing a Rolex. As a former Police Officer I can assure you that someone will try & rip you off. I can understand wanting to wear a nice watch but unless you come from a very well to do family & you are in a private school where everybody is wearing a Rolex than you're just asking for trouble. I hope you enjoy you 16th birthday...

I can totally identify, my dad was major PO'd when I got a job at 13 working at Baskin Robbins for minimum (I think back in the days that was like about $3-4/hr?). While I agree studying is important, so are extra curricular activites (ECAs) or jobs as long as it doesn't interfere with the studying. Colleges are now looking beyond just grades and do consider heavily the ECAs as well. Having a job/ECAs early on also helps develop the social skills required to adapt to the work place once school is over. Unfiortunately many parents either don't realize or overlook this very important aspect.

As for the OP, I think many have already offered excellent advice. I personally would get the Sub (or the Tudor).

Cheers,
Tim

Kyle, earning your money the old fashioned way - working for it - will make any purchase mean a lot more. IMHO, you will never be truly satisfied with something you have not worked for. I would venture within 6 months of receiving your Rolex, regardless of model, you will lose interest and be off looking for the next bigger, better, faster toy. At least set a goal for yourself to coincide with your birthday (maybe to get dive licensed or something). Just my 2 cents.

I wouldn't get the DayDate. You already have a datejust and that is just basically a similar watch aside from the safety issue of being a target. My personal opinion is that it is an "old man's" watch. Go for the sub. It will probably last long enough to give to your kids.

As much as I would love to work, I just don't have the time. Weekends I do extracurricular things, and I'm usually loaded for homework. For summers, time is limited too. I usually go to a music camp or something like that. Then that remaining month I prep and stuff. So far, I have had my Explorer for a year, and I wouldn't change a thing. Anyway, back to Gabriel's original post.

A very good point. Without that type of info, these polls are pretty pointless as all they really are is a popularity poll on models. We all know the most popular model for the general public might not necessarily be the best fit for our own desires & needs.

Thanks to Everyone that has given me a positive attitude. My dad doesn't wear watches. I do not need sermons about life. How do you think I have my collection? My Pc? I've worked for them. I've bought them with my own sweat. Some of you have been lucky that your mom or dad has bought your stuff. If life is hard where u are, here in Puerto Rico (Does of u who dont know Puerto Rico is a US territory) is worst! Yes I go to private school, big deal, my mom has worked hard for it! If I get a Rolex (Which I dont think so because u are making me feel bad about it) most of the time its gonna be on it box on my safe (which I bought too) and will be only worn on special occasions!

If you are going to give me sermons or your thought on life, please don't. I get enough of that from my mom and my family. Please only post your opinion on what should i get (If I get It"

and God Bless!

If I were you, i'm assuming you're a skinny 16 year old, I wouldn't worry about size as you will grow into the watch. I would go with one of the following (I would scrap all of the watches you listed except maybe the sub-date) in no particular order:

Sea Dweller (my personal favorite Rolex - maybe my favorite watch period)
GMT IIc
GMT II Pepsi

The Air King w/ engine turned bezel doesn't do it for me. I prefer the standard bezel. If I was going to get an Air King I would go w/ the classic silver face w/ stick indices. I'm looking for one of those myself.

The datejust, in my opinion, is not a young man's watch. It does nothing for me. I think 60 yrs old plus.

A day-date is sweet but see comments re datejust

The Sub is a great watch but I would choose the 3 I listed above over the sub date or no-date. The Sea Dweller is superior, in my opinion, due to the lack of a cyclops over the date, the thicker crystal that rises high above the bezel and the added weight/thicknenss. The GMT IIc is just a sick looking watch (although i'm not the biggest fan of the maxi case/indices). The GMT II Pepsi is my second favorite Rolex behind the SD. If it didn't have a cyclops it would contend for my #1 spot.

Good luck w/ your decision. Don't let anyone dissuade you from refusing your father's gift. Who cares what a bunch of dudes on the internet think?

I think the Sub would be an excellent first watch. Best of luck and keep us posted on what was decided.

Do you think you're full-grown yet? If not, think about what size watch you'll want to wear eventually. An Air King may fit you perfectly now, but if you get any bigger, it may sit awkwardly on your wrist. Though not mentioned, my choice would be the Explorer I (though it isn't available with the fluted bezel you seem to like).

Personally, I'd avoid the DD, it's just too gold for me, and the Sub is a bit too common (if I were 16 especially, I don't think I'd want a watch all my friends recognized as being expensive). However, whichever one you get, the style of the watch will be severely overshadowed by the fact that your dad bought you something you will not only have for your entire lifetime, but that you can pass on to your son or daughter one day.

Thank you! I'd like a EXP1 but they are a bit hard to find but at a good price. A SD would be nice since I like to wear my watches for the beach and freestyle diving.
