I don't have a Rolex yet, so I'm trying to decide what my first one should be. I could get the green one now, or could wait for the new one to come out. I'm planning to get one watch to wear for everything.

Advantages of the new sub:
Glidelock clasp more adjustable (more comfortable)
Bezel more wear-resistant
Parachrom hairspring (more accuracy)
Longer-lasting lume
AR cyclops
More blingy
Service available longer
no diver's extension (I'd never use it)
will be "in style"
won't be "the old version" for the next 10-20-30 years

Advantages of the LV:
Clasp less likely to break
Bi-directional bezel with YM spring
Lighter (more comfortable)
More likely to become collectible
Cheaper
More stealthy
Crystal sticks up above bezel (like the look)
Bracelet looks proportional to case
Choice of bezel color (black/green)
Available now
Bezel can develop patina

Note that these are what I see as advantages, you might see them differently.

I think the shoulders on the newer model are more straight and gives it a "blocky" look, whereas the older Sub has nice curved shoulders that flow perfectly to the oyster bracelet. I consider this issue an aesthetic design flaw in all of the new Subs.

Depends on which version tickles your fancy. We still don't know if Rolex will be producing a ceramic LV or if they will produce a pepsi or coke ceramic GMT-II. If you want to wait for a ceramic LV and it doesn't come out, you will be forced purchased a used LV.

I don't think that you can really apply logic or a list of pro's/con's to a watch purchase..

It's more of a gut feeling of what lyou like and want on your wrist...

However, I think that for the next year or two, you will be seeing the last of the "cheap" Sub Dates..

3.Bezel more wear-resistant.Again perhaps but a hell of lot dearer to replace and reading the many many post on TRF rolex watches in general get a very pampered live.So IMHO
extra wear factor not needed.

4.Parachrom hairspring (more accuracy).Again would doubt it Rolex watches over the past 40 years have shown tremendous accuracy I have a 30 year sub + 1 second a day.And all Rolex watches are COSC tested no matter what spring is in case Parachrome IMHO is 90% pure hype.

5.Longer-lasting lume.Again possible but would doubt it.

6.AR cyclops.Might be a little bit of a advantage in say direct sunlight etc but no big deal.

7.More blingy. Well if you like that sort of thing perhaps a plus.

8.Service available longer.Dont thing you will have to worry about any service issues with any cal 3135 for the next 40 plus years.

9.will be "in style".Will be the in style for who, its only a ceramic bezel etc.

10.won't be "the old version" for the next 10-20-30 years.Well basically the present sub has changed very little over the last 20 years would expect if they bring a ceramic out it will be the same.And if they do bring out a ceramic version,it will be far more expensive and would doubt if it will be at ADs until 2010/11.

11.Bi-directional bezel with YM spring.Well a Bi-directional bezel would be of little use in a diving watch
As its a diving watch you want uni-directional as it is now on all the Rolex diving watches.

If I were getting a ceramic, I'd get the black version, not the LV.

All SUBs have uni-directional bezels which turn in the counter-clockwise direction only.

Looking at the op's statement is it possible to fit a yacht master spring to a sub to get a bi directional bezel?

I guess so, but why would you want to do that to a Diver's watch? It would completely defeat the original purpose for what the watch was intended!!

Why would you want to put a nato strap on instead of the work of art that comes with a sub...but some do

Well, seeing as I don't dive, I'd never use the original purpose. To use the bezel as a timer in general, it would be more convenient if I could turn it in either direction. Since it's such an easy thing to change and change back (even easier than swapping the bezel), I consider it an advantage.

In that case, it's pretty much what you want to wear personally. If you are leaning more towards the ceramic bezel sub, then wait to purchase that. If you want the older look of the LV sub then purchase that. Only you know the answer to this question.....

Go to your local AD and compare the LV sub to the SS GMT-IIc, that will give you an idea of the Ceramic for a comparison right now. Usually, you can't make a decision until you get hands on with the product. I don't know where you are in NY, but London Jewelers in Americana Manhasset has top notch salespersons.

I had my heart set on a Submariner!
Got a new job and set out to buy one.
Only an LV Sub was available...I decided to buy it!

Unfortunately I picked up the wrong wallet and was not able to buy the LV.

Two days later, I was in my hometown and visited the Rolex dealer I had bought my watch ten years earlier. I told him I wanted a Sub, almost bought the LV etc...............

I was offered a Sub, or the GMT Master IIC.

As I am not a Diver, but do travel the world a fair bit, the GMT won me over.

So I invested a load of money in something that I didn't even know I wanted unti I saw it in the flesh......all I knew was that I WAS going to get a new Rolex.

Today I still love the GMT IIC, still admire Subs and all watches!

Try them all and then make your decision...you might surprise yourself!

If you can hold on your decision, I would wait at least until the Basel announcement next year. Then you can at least see what the new subs may look like.
If you don't like them, then get a LV at that time. If you do like them - you've made the right choice waiting and should get the new sub.
