Which insurance for your Rollies (et al)?

Which insurance company do you guys use to cover your timepieces? Does Jewelers Mutual cover timepieces?

USAA for all of mine. Blanket policy for all pieces up to $2500, not to exceed $12,500 for any one claim; pieces (watches included) above $2500 value are listed separately with all their corresponding details.

Easy to work with, but get your appraisals in pdf format from the appraiser. It will make life much easier when adding new items to your policy.

USAA - added as a valuable articles rider onto homeowners policy. VERY reasonable, no deductible, will repair if dropped, you name it. It was like $50-100 for a year. I'm sure other homeowners carriers offer something similar.

Oh yeah, for comparison purposes - it only covers one piece - my SS GMTIIc.

My policy from StateFarm runs about 1% of the appraised value of the watches.

Why would I want to spend so much money on insurance in such a safe place like NZ......and then deprive myself of another Rolex by the end of each year!!??

State Farm.

Had to pay to get the watches appraised by jeweler, but I think it's worth it. I know some folks can get ADs to do for free, but not me.

Depending on your zip code...JEWELERS MUTUAL is a good one to insure with.
You got to have a separate appraisal for high ticket items

The nice part of having the rider for jewelry is that the policy covers your property even in transit, as when a new piece is being shipped to you.

+1

You can also call your agent and get covered if your appraisal is pending. Would to have a new watch stolen just after getting it resized!

For those who mentioned State Farm - does State Farm have any special requirements for insuring watches (such as a safe)?

The cost per $1000 of appraised value varies from Company to Company. In addition, in higher risk areas the rates can be considerable. What ever Company you insure with (if you choose to insure at all) make sure the coverage provides "all risk" coverage which will include "any direct physical loss including mysterious loss" for example you just don't know what happened to it. Or it fell overboard, or you knocked your arm into a metal object and damaged or distroyed your watch. It should cover all these types of occurances. Be careful, some company's exclude travel, hotels, baggage, etc. These company's are usually "Non-Admitted Carriers". Anyone who would like to consult on thier coverage please feel free to sent me a private message and I will be glad to assit, and evaluate what you are being offered. I have over 35 years experience in the field. On major point: Be sure not to obtain what I call a "feel good" appraisal. In other words, your retailer says: I will sell it to you for X, but I will give you a "good" appraisal for you insurance. Don't be fooled, the insurance company will only pay what the item can be replaced for, not the inflated appraised value, plus you will be overpaying on the premium.
