Its not that they hate Rolex, but they hate what Rolex represents to them. If Rolex means something positive to you, by all means enjoy it.
Many luxury items (and celebrities) have as many people who despise what they represent, as people who admire and enjoy the product and what the product means to them.

End of the day, its what makes us/you happy. You can go American and buy a car and have it break down. Or buy Jap and $$$ saved in repairs go to rolex fund:-)
Couple guys i work with live in golf communities like myself. They spend average $900/month during the summer/spring in food, fees, t time. Figure 6 months or so, thats equivalent to a rolex. For us at least we have something physical that reminds us of what we spent. I dont' see them saying to each other, remember summer 2008, i scored a 6 over handicap over you?? What about the year before when i scored a 2 over?

I hear you loud and clear... I frequent one of the worlds most popular Porsche forums, and if you did a search for Rolex, you would be amazed at...
1. the HUGE number of threads and posts about Rolex - I believe that often collectors and enthusiasts who appreciate fine engineering and build quality gravitate to both watches and cars 2. how passionate some of the Rolex HATERS are... the irony of course, is that they would happily spend $200K on a 20 year old 911 RS The common ground is that a vintage 911 and a vintage Rolex would both be considered in the Top 10 of the most "iconic" designs ever produced (just my humble opinion). Others would be the original coke bottle, maybe a Vespa scooter, and probably now an iPod!!!

Many people just don't like the guy on top. Doesn't matter in what area, cars, sports, film, even the good old USA.

some want you to know that they "could have" what you have(rolex) but chose not to. meaning they probably cant afford it. most people that can afford them either have them or dont care, and wouldnt say anything. |

My reply to him was that if he stopped smoking, he'd save about US$3,000 a year which in theory, means he could buy at least one real watch every year - and live longer and healthier on top of that. That shut him up pretty quickly. Unfortunately, he still smokes. |

I buy based on what I like and Rolex is one brand of watch that I like. In Australia I don't think anyone notices the watch you are wearing.

I tell them this: Name me something in your house, that you bought 10yrs ago, used it and used it a lot and today, 10yrs later, it is worth same or more than what you paid 10 yrs ago? And you know what?? Their mouths are shut ...they can't name anything that fits the bill ....
Only things that working people can invest in and are guaranteed to appreciate in value, are 1) REAL ESTATE -- especially homes .. 2) 401K Plan 3) GOLD 4) ROLEX Diving Watches .... |

Lots of people say these things about Rolex, without even taking the time to do any research. The same people are now bitching and complaining about Omega and Breitling prices, for their new inhouse movements. Some models are even priced 2 grand more than the same model with the modified ETA movement.
I will have to admit, the reason I stayed away from Rolex for the longest time, was that I liked the look of a lot of other watches better, and they were priced a bit higher than I wanted to pay. Lately, however, I am having a great time in the Rolex world, at the expense of Omega. Their attitude of late I find to be very elitist and arrogant. They know that Rolex has always beat them out in sales and quality, and being by far the largest manufacturer of COSC watches. And I think that they (Omega) are aggravated by this, just as many consumers are aggravated by the fact that they feel Rolexes are out of range for them. Very fortunately for me, I am really getting into the smaller size watches, 34mm to 36mm. There is absolutely no other watchmaker out there who has the selection of models, and the range of dials in these size watches. And each and every one of the watches is an inhouse movement! I give top marks for Rolex for staying away from the "bigger is better" trends. I looked at the GMT IIc on the weekend, an absolute stunner, and that at 40mm. It has a wonderful wrist presence, yet it will fit smaller wrists as well. How clever is that!? I wish that I had been on the ball earlier, and paid more attention to Rolex. Fortunately, it's never too late. There will be a new one for me within the next couple of weeks. Cheers, Carl |
