Sorry if this is a really stupid question about winding...

When looking at the crown from the side, facing the Rolex logo should it be turned clockwise or counter-clockwise?

Clockwise. You should feel a little resistance when winding that direction. It will still click in the other direction but there will be no resistance.

ok, thanks, there's a little more resistance than from the Speedmaster, but perhaps the watch is fully wound, the seller wound it for me at the store and it's been on my wrist ever since.

BTW I guess it's normal not to hear or feel the rotor at all?

rolex has a clutch mechanism you can never over wind it.... so the resistance will be even all through... keep it 40 winds from start and you ll be set!

Thanks, yes, I think I've reached the clutch pretty fast, it feels a little like slippage. I'm sure I'll learn this better, when the watch is not in use and I restart it, but that's not happening anytime soon! It will stay on my wrist. My other watches will just have to be jealous.

Generally you won't feel or hear the rotor in most Rolex models..

Agreed, the only model I've felt the rotor moving is the Daytona, which, if memory serves me, uses a slightly different rotor to other models.
