Pre Owned DJ For Wife: Worth The Savings & Heartaches?

I can pick up a Z Series 36mm DJ pre owned from a reputable jeweler and save roughly $600.00 as opposed to buying from a "good guy". It is a once in a lifetime purchase so Due Diligence is prudent. A few questions.

Seller is not an AD however they claim the watch comes serviced with a one year warranty. I wonder who serviced the watch if at all and I assume there is no way to judge if the service was performed.

The Jeweler appears to be quite reputable however since they are not an AD and probably do not have a certified Rolex tech on site do I need to be concerned about how the service performed?

Watch comes complete with boxes, paperwork, etc.

Lastly I would like opinions regarding whether it is worth saving $600.00 to buy pre owned or is it wiser long term to suck it up and pay the extra cash?

Common sense dictates that "A Rolex is a Rolex" so what is the difference? After all if you send in your watch to RSC they come back in the same condition as new. On the other hand owning a new piece makes it feel like it was yours from birth so to speak.

So are you saying it is 600 dollars less than new from a ad? That is only 400 euros/pounds not a big saving I would get new.

IMO I always believe it is worth a savings (especially $600) if the individual you are purchasing from is reputable, reliable, and will stand behind the watch. With the savings you can purchase her additional jewelry or at the least treat her to a wonderful dinner at Berns when you give it to her the watch!

Actually if I bought new thru an AD the savings would be roughly $2500.00 and add the 7% tax on 6500.00

I would buy grey market so savings would actually be $600.00
I believe a Z Series is circa 2007-2008?

If you are buying from a trusted source, it only makes sense to save the money.

That said.... I got my wife an older TT DJ from a local source. It has a new aftermarket dial / bracelet and was priced accordingly. They offer a 3yr warranty. When we first got it, it would stop intermittently. It took a few tries before they finally discovered that problem. Then it ran fine for a year and suddenly stopped... but this time it was easy to see that it was broken. A few days later and another new part and it seems to be running better than when we first got it! Anyway, just glad we have a 3yr warranty to work out the bugs of this 30yr old watch. She loves it and it amazed it is so old, since it looks new.

If the dealer is a well known trusted source its nice to meet in person and do a FTF especially if they have a store front you can visit if there are problems.

IF there is not an existing reputation with the dealer and they are not an AD I really think Id pay an extra few hundred to buy from a well know dealer here whose got a great rep and you know will stand behind you if there were any problems.

If its a lifetime purchase its worth spending a few extra bucks for mental comfort.

If it is a watch I am buying and doubt I will have that long I will usually just buy the cheapest/best example I can find

Well , all savings should be considered ; but with a present like this , the fact that it is brand new makes it extra special . Do not know , maybe your wife was pre-owned too ?

you know your other half the best...do you think she will be less happy with pre-owned?

I just think for a present..unless the person knows ahead of time...$600 is money well spent...

a different perspective...she will have it for 10+ years...how much is gas in your car this week?

I'm all for preowned and will preach to the masses 'til the cows come home. However, I usually shop older than a Z series.

If they had it serviced, they should be able to produce a receipt with the warranty.

Is it a local purchase? You might be able to do better if you shop around, but local is great. You have hands on the product, develop contacts and support the local economy.

My wife was more than pleased with her pre-owned SS/Plat midsize Yachtmaster. Granted it was seven years old and needed a service, but it had all boxes and papers and was in like-new condition. We got it for a fantastic price and even with the $600 service we came out WAY ahead vs. a new one. I guess it all depends on several factors.

I wouldn't have any problem buying pre-owned for myself. But if it was a gift for my wife I'd buy new. My wife, who doesn't know much about watches, wouldn't be too happy about receiving a second-hand gift.

$600 is not a significant amount of savings. I would buy new on this case. Typically, pre-owned DJ's are significantly discounted from their retail prices (25-35% or more), so I would shop around.

I ant to thank everyone for the replies. I am leaning towards new since a
pre owned DJ should go for less. Plus the fact that my wife knows that it is "her" watch. She and I both know that a pre owned piece purchased from a reputable source is basically as good a new.
This watch will have special significance since it will be our 10'th anniversary. I assure you that after 10 years of my BullSh*t she really deserves 10 Rolexes.

I currently own an older Datejust bought pre-owned. It looks new and runs great. Saved a couple thousand. Would not hesitate to do it again.
