Submariner Going Crazy

My 1680 Submariner is acting up. Just noticed this AM.

I set the watch at 2:23 this afternoon, right now it says 3:03. Any

idea what is causing it to jump ahead like this. Old Northeast Jewelers

went through the whole watch back in March. Any help would be

appreciated.

Sounds like a classic magnetized watch issue..

Almost any watchmaker can take care of it........

Magnetized issue? Can you please explain? Are there places I shouldn't get near with my Sub?

Interesting, don't know what I could have been around to do

that to the Sub. Put up Xmas lights this weekend. They were LEDs.

Have had the watch 27 years and noted just recently that it was

keeping great time.

Mhh... would things like moving a speaker be able to magnetize the watch. I hope not..

I don't remember where I read it but an article dealing with magnetism and wristwatches said bass woofers were probably the biggest cause of magnetized and therefore inaccurate watches. The magnetic field emitted by woofers is quite strong but it does not have a large effective field. Hence you are at most risk when you pickup or move a woofer.

When I got up this morning the watch had jumped ahead a little over

5 hours since setting it about 2:30 yesterday afternoon. Am going to

take it over to Old Northeat Jewelers on Saturday. Hope it doesn't take too

long to figure out/fix.

On old watches with early hairsprings, almost any magnetic field can re-align the structure of the very tiny spring.. This could be putting it in your pocket with your cellphone, your car keys if you have the kind that "talks" with your car, or even setting it in close proximity to high energy lines, amps, and big magnet speakers.. You can even drop it and actually shake the metal molecules into a more aligned configuration.. Most of the digital world, and new metallurgy innovations have spawned a generation that doesn't know how easily done and common this used to be..

Once the tiny wire spring is slightly magnetized, the coils actually attract one another, effectively making the spring more solid, it swings faster, and the watch ticks faster...

There could be other reasons..but this seems most likely.....

Thanks for the additional information. The change in the watch was

just so dramatic. I thought maybe the minute hand was loose and just

swinging forward on its own as the jump in time is so great. After all

these years of reliability it is not a pleasant experience. Wearing a Citizen

Eco-Drive($117) right now. Keeps perfect time but is not the same!

Bought a new Sub ND "Z" serial COSC about 8 mos ago. Checked the accuracy every month and its been about 1.2 sec per day fast since new, until this month its about 4-5 seconds a day fast! Didnt drop it or damage it in anyway.

Is it possible that it got magnatized somehow? Dont recall having it around any magnets or anything with a strong Mag field. I dont know what to do and Im not liking it. I know its still within COSC standards but I liked 1.2 seconds a whole lot better. Should I bring it to my AD? Its still within warranty. How do they de-magnatize a watch anyway? Thanks

A change in a second or so over 24 hours is not likely caused by magnetization.. It is more likely that when it was oiled, the oil had pooled around the pivots and increased the friction rather than decreased it.. Now that things have stabilized, you are seeing a true indication of it's timing..

If you are not happy, take it in for a re-regulation........

Thanks for the quick answer. I'll wait a month or two and see if it returns to the way it was. Do you think they will regulate even though its still within standards?

I have heard many times that Rolex trained watchmakers are trained to ensure their work goes out the door at +5 to -1 seconds.

If you are dissatisfied with the timekeeping, I'm pretty sure that they would regulate it.. It's pretty common to have this done..
