Enjoy the compliment and move on, it is obvious the guy knew watches since he knew the model. Its all the other questions you get from people that don't know watches, that make me uncomfortable...

I have an Air King, wear it daily, and no one has ever noticed it. Matter of fact, the only time I ever brought it to anyone's attention was when a buddy of mine was giving me grief (he wears a Breitling). After I showed him my watch, he was quick to point out that he also had a Panerai at home. Still not a Rolex!!!

I understand the discomfort that might come from a customer comment because they may think you're charging too much for your product or services since you can afford a "luxury" watch. But, anyone else doesn't bother me a bit. If someone knows the model, then you can be pretty certain they're into watches.

I just had a customer comment and compliment my GV and turns out he was trying one on and trying to decide whether or not to purchase. So, we had a nice conversation about watches, his Omega and my GV!

Yeah, I feel somewhat embarrassed too at times... I never show my watches to my parents, only family members I show them to is my Wife and one of my cousins. I have a couple of friends (besides TRF ::): that I feel comfortable showing my watches to.

I don't care about total strangers.

compliments on my watch, while nice, do make me feel a bit uncomfortable at times. i think it's because i buy my watches for me, because i'm watch nerd, and not to be flashy or draw attention to myself. i'm a bit like bayerische (andreas) in that i don't really show them to people except for the friends that are into them as well, as most people i know would just think i was trying to 'show off.'

i guess i've become somewhat paranoid as well considering the crazy world we live in. never sure if someone is admiring my timepiece or plotting to rob me for it.

I have had only one patient complement my watch. She asked me if it was a Rolex. I replied yes. It did make me uncomfortable because I did not want her to think that I was a pompous doctor or something like that...She just stated..."It looks nice and you deserve it".......Interesting don't you think...

I've gotten very few comments in the 23 years I've owned and worn my TT DJ 16013. However, what I've notice much more often is a "look." I usually catch "the look" when I turn my head quickly for some reason and catch someone looking at the watch. Of course, I live in Southern California where one has to be cool, and making a big fuss over someone's watch would be so un-cool. After all, we out here must maintain our laid-back reputation.

I've had lots of conversations - met a bartender on Cape Cod who was wearing a red Sub - and had owned it since new. (had no idea what it was worth and didn't care).

My hardware store owner wears a no date Sub, and notices every new Rolex I get.

I sit side by side with my customers for about 20 minutes at a whack, and have had lots of "nice watch" comments - Rolex watches are pretty thin on the ground in Northern Maine and folks like examining them.

I've never had an uncomfortable encounter.

I'll never forget the first time I was complimented on my Daytona which was handed down to me from my Dad on my 21st Birthday. It was 1988 and I was a Paralegal assisting the Senior Partner (Who never spoke to me on a personal level) in Trial. He looked down and said with a surprised look "Is that a Daytona? I've always admired Daytonas". I was quick to reply that it was given to me by my Dad. I didn't want him to think he was paying me too much money! I never wore it to work again after that!

A hotel manager in Chicago area complimented me "Datejust", my answer: "thank you, it is old, but look the same as 30 years ago".

My friend is a doctor as well and he won't wear any of his Rolexes to the hospital even though other doctors there do. He doesn't want others to judge him by his watch. He also drives a 95 Toyota Camry to work instead of his 08 BMW M5 for similar reasons.

I know that several of my clients wear Rolexes and one is even a collector of many fine timepieces, but I never really bring up the topic for discussion because I don't want to draw attention to what I'm wearing. I'm their IT tech, so them knowing that I'm wearing close to a $10k watch may make them wonder if they are paying too much. Yes, I could wear my Tissot to work but I wouldn't feel as happy. And to be honest, it's not just the watch. I feel uncomfortable when I pull up in my BMW as well.
I have that happen too, Vu. It's one reason I usually don't say anything when I notice someone's watch.

I'm a little lost. We spend lots of time here talking about watches, posting pics, complimenting eachother on a new toy, and schedule get togethers. Then when some real breathing person is within arms length and start a real live conversation about our watch we're uncomfortable???I'd love to have a conversation with a real live person about watches rather than over a keyboard. Why do we find it so difficult to carry on a conversation in person rather than over a computer screen???

Good question.. let me postulate my theory.

If you have ever attended a GTG you will discover lots of "real breathing people" who won't shut up about watches! I believe we are more comfortable because we "know" these people. An element of trust exists.

If a stranger comments on youe watch, it's normal human nature to be a little guarded. Why...? probably because relatively speaking, a Rolex is a valuable item, (some much more so than others) so a little caution kicks in, until you are sure the other person isn't about to clip you on the head and take your pride and joy. This makes for awkward conversation, and it's not easy or comfortable, as you subconciously question their motives.

At a GTG, we know their motives, ie. share the enjoyment of fine timepieces.

I wrote a post a year or more ago, not long after getting my GMTIIc. A courier delivering a parcel made a complimetary remark... I was happy to engage him in conversation about it, but the next couple of questions turned into grilling me about the cost! Yes, my guard went up, maybe a red flag as well.

Thed internet allows us some anonymity, so people are happy to share sometimes very valuable collectons. I doubt you would get someone with a Platinum DDII pulling up his sleeve in a pub to a stranger, just because they said something about the blinbg, and showing something worth the price of a very nice car, lest you lose your arm!

Anyway, just a theory, I could be wrong...

Was on a plane the other day and the passenger next to me had a Pam on, not sure which model but defo wasn't a base model. I complemented him on the watch. He stated that he loved Pams and thought it was very comfy, I then stated I used to own a Pam, to be honest I got the feeling he wasn't a WIS so I didn't hassle him for a closer look. I had on my Sub.

At work, rolex's and other high brands are quite common so we all normally check each others watches out especially if some one has something new.
Spotted a couple of vintage Subs as well at work, a red sub and an old matte dial sub, which was pretty cool.

I believe that we buy luxury goods for more than one reason, and one of them is for a little showmanship. Lack of compliments may make you wonder why you spend so much on nice things, if only to please yourself or reward yourself for hard work.
If you're noticed for having something nice on, go with it. it shows you have style too.

I volunteer at a local hospital and I was standing with my arms cross and my IIC exposed, and a Dr. noticed right away and quietly asked if it was a Rolex, and I said yes, and he asked me which model it was and we quickly struck up a conversation, he wears a classic SS sub no date.

I was recently at a diner having lunch and had my sleeves rolled up and my YM in the sun (I was sitting by the window admiring the dial). While I was drinking my coffee a cute waitress stopped by and said, "I love your watch. It's so shiny!" I almost spilled my coffee. She got a nice tip. Best lunch I've had in a while.
