I'm out of the watch buying business

Today the last of my grail watches arrived. My first love was a vintage "Magnum PI" GMT. I picked up my 16750 last fall.

My 2nd love was a snowflake Tudor. Today, as I pulled in from the drive back from Las Vegas, the mailman was walking up my driveway with a package under his arm containing this little gem.

Makes for an awesome companion to my GMT. Brothers in acrylic.

6 months out of the HK RSC (with receipt) for new bezel, crystal, dial, and hands. Ready to roll.

I love how light and slim the old Rolex and Tudor acrylic watches are. They don't weigh anything on a NATO.

dude I love Tudor watches. It's more, like, rare, or exclusive or something when I think of rolex and watches. Like this aweesome-cool guy you don't really know know about, who looks like the coolest guy in the world or something, who is actually related to someone pretty interesting you already know.

Great watches. You sure don't see Tudor's that often. Something tells me you'll find another reason to open the wallet.
Congrats,
dP

Not for a while at least. Between these two beauties and my rebuilt vintage Seiko, it's tempting to sell everything else I have.

Congrats it's always such a rush to find your grail...
I had never seen one of these before you posted the pics here. I love those hands and square markers they are so unique! Could you post some lume shots of that beauty?

This is a new dial and hands. Though the dial says tritium, the hands and dial are superluminova. Glows like a torch based on a few minutes in the sun.

The GMT, while also a redial, was done in 1998 and is the one of the last of the tritium. It has a softer glow, but is consistently lite all night.

Aw nuts, Jeff, I didn't realise you were after one of those Tudor Subs. There was a similar one, hands and all, that was sitting in my watchmaker's display case for a good long while.

Anyway, with lume shots, you're gonna need a tripod. With the lights on, focus the camera and lock the focus. If your camera allows manual settings, set it to 1/6 of a second and maximise the aperture size by bringing the f-figure (e.g. f 3.5) as low as possible. Set the timer, hit the button and turn off the lights - voila!

Beautiful lume shot, James.

And great Tudor, Jeff. Love the square markers. Makes for a very distinctive look.

My wife is getting a new camera this weekend. I'll try your instructions with that and see what I can do. That's a great photo.

Thanks for the thoughts. I've been looking for one of these on and off for a while. Decided to pull the trigger at the end of the year and began searching in earnest. Sold a few watches I don't wear any more to raise the cash. Finding one fresh out of RSC service was good fortune.

Jeff, funny you should mention the Magnum GMT. I just watched the GMT eposide again ("Home From the Sea" in Season 4), and while it was a Pepsi 1675 or 16750 while on his father's wrist, it became a gold bezel/black dial GMT while Magnum was stranded at sea. One other thing is that according to the story, magnum's father was wearing the watch in 1950, but the GMT ref. 6542) was only launched in 1954.

I lived in Hawaii from 1980 to 1983 when I was a young boy. Tom Selleck was down the street living in a house in Black Point. I was his paperboy. A bunch of us were frequently used as back drops riding out bikes, etc. We were always around the set.

Between his watch and all the pilots with GMT's I'd see, I KNEW someday I would have one too.

I didn't know anything else about Rolex except for the GMT until much later.

Hey, cool! I'm a Magnum fan - got everything up to Season 4 now, and I've heard that 5 and 6 are on their way.

So, what was Selleck like in real life?
