Long term storage?

Hello all!

New to the Rolex world and I am going to finally take the plunge on a S/S Daytona white dial. But I am also looking to purchase two S/S Datejust for my girls and put them away until they turn 21. Problem is they are 7 and 8 now. Question is am I going to have to do any kinda if maintance if I just have them stored in a safe for that long? Thanks again. Have been a lurker on the form for a few months.

Why not buy them closer to the time? You'll also know what they like!

Lucky girls!

I kind of wish I was your daughter--I mean son! I would wait if it were me--you never know what happens between now and then.

Our reasoning for doing it now is that we are in a position to do it, also cost. When I first thought about a Daytona, they were 6k, look what there are up to now. In 15 yrs what's a datejust gonna cost?

A watch not running has no wear however with that length of time a service would be in order prior to use. Even with today's oils that's a long time and the gaskets will show their age.

You could wind them every so often, but I'd still have them serviced before any sustained use.

Some recommend that a stored watch be wound every few months. I would want to store such items in a dry condition as moisture is likely to be the biggest problem..

By the time you decide to use these watches, the seals may have taken a set and it would be a good idea to have them replaced before you give them away...........

When I gave my daughter a DJ, it was the one her mother had worn for the previous 10 years.. We just sent it in for a complete service first, and it came back looking like new.

I once bought several Rolex Tudors from a guy in Germany, now these were from a huge collection from the 1960s early 1970s.All were BNIB never been worn boxes tags papers etc,and as far as I know not even wound since bought, but I tried them all before buying. Now I sold most but kept a few and one lady Tudor for the wife. Now this watch was from late 1969 early 1970s and sat in its box for over 30 years. But I gave it a full wind and it started straight away and keeping excellent time. But after a month I gave it to my watchmaker friend to give it a service and check over.He remarked there was still oil on the vital parts and movement was still as new but he did give just a oil and seal service that was around 5 years ago.Now wife wears the watch daily and it still keeps remarkable time for a old timer, but now not quite in such a mint condition now but due for a service soon.

why don't you invest the money for them , the cost invested would yeild them dozens of watches instead
