Who will inherit our Rolexes? And should they?

I was just thinking about this.

At the current rate I'm going, I'm bound to have a sizeable collection. At age 27, a resident, I have 3 in my collection. Considering good job outlook, good investments, good health (hopefully) - I don't think it's out of the realm of possibility for 1 watch/year for the next 20 years.

So considering the possibility of a near 2 dozen collection someday, what happens when I pass?

I just stumbled over a thread earlier today that those who will inherit will merely bring it to the pawnshop before I even get embalmed. I am of the camp who believes that whoever inherits my 20 or so watches will keep it for as long as possible (unless they're financially strapped of course).

So, what do you think is going to happen to your collection someday?

My children or grandchildren only. And they will understand the significance of the watch/watches to me and my wishes that they stay in the family.

I'll pass mine down to family - but I wouldn't mind betting they'll liquidate them for the cash.

Non of the options are what I would do. I have no family or children to leave my watches to so they would in all likelyhood go to close friends

Hopefully I have another 40 odd years before I have to think to hard about this again though

My son will get my GMT for sure. How many other watches he inherits will be determined by the monetary requirements at the time of my demise.

My son and son-in-law are both WIS's so I expect they will get most of them if I don't have to barter for food and shelter in my dotage.

My son will get mine. He's a good kid on his way to becomming a great man. He'll appreciate them as I do.

My old friend's younger brother has always politely admired my 20 year-old Datejust. When/if I get it in gear and write down a will/trust, I'd leave it to him - and I'm sure he'd be shocked. But of everyone I know, he's the first guy I think of who'd get a kick out of that watch.

Of course, I could get hit by a bus tomorrow and then it's all goes into probate. I'd suggest to anybody who actually cares what becomes of your stuff once you're gone to get a lawyer and put it in writing. Saying it aloud to friends/family won't cut it.

my son of course.. my AK was given to me by my folks when i graduated.. so that would definitely go to him.. my newer acquisitions would most likely go to him too..

My wife and I are handing down our Rolex's to our two kids. My wife has a diamond dial and bezel Datejust and I have a Deep Sea. We have a boy and girl.

It warms my heart knowing my son will wear my watch one day and our daughter will have my wife's.

To me that is one of the heritage and marquis of the brand. It's a generational heirloom.

And yes, they should get them...they are my kids and they deserve it!

Does it REALLY matter? I mean you ARE dead when all that goes down, right? That you enjoy the pieces while alive (assuming you have otherwise provided for those dependent on you) is all that matters where watches are concerned.

Sometimes the kids ask about the stuff I have...

I tell them to pick out the stuff they want and toss the rest in the box with me........

I'm pretty sure that they'll figure it out........

I will pass on one watch to each of my children... The rest will depend on my finances.

I'm specifically keeping my collection to three because I have three sons. I don't know what my wife will do with her two though...

I will leave 1 to each of my 2 nephews, 1 to my godson and my daughter will keep the rest of them. At the age of 7, my daughter knows how much i cherish them. She knows the AD's I go to and my Grey Market guy by name. I'll tell her we're going to Boston, & her response is "what are we going to see Kal for a watch or something". So I think she will keep cuz she knows how I am w/ them

This is a long term investment for our kids, I need to constantly upgrade and add to my collection for our future generation to remember us by.

While she gave me that Oh Right..!! look but she stills allows me to get 2 watches every year.

My father already told me his plans of leaving me his TT DJ when he passes. I will wear it with honor. I couldn't think of doing anything other than passing it on when my time runs out.

you are makng alot of assuptions ! ...besides..you;ll need to get a date first before you have to worry about things like inheritence ! LOL

What date? I am making assumptions, it's a valid question though.

I have made a new will every time there was some significant change in my life, e.g. marriage, newborn etc.
So far the last will has been there for like 18 years and I see no reason to change it.
This reminds me to check if my lawyer still has the document or not - he's semi retired already

My eldest son is a real WIS. A couple of days ago we bought him a new serial 16610 for his 18th birthday which is next year.
I would think that he would like my watches but I have bought fairly carefully to create a nest egg and whilst I really would not want to, they will be sold if cash is needed later on.

My son will be the lucky recipient of my growing collection one day, though I'll probably see that he gets them before I pop my clogs as payment for wheeling me around when I've lost my senses and drooling on my pjs at which point I won't be able to tell a swatch from a Rolex.
