Arabic orientation -- technical names?
I've noticed that on some DJ dials the arabic numbers are always standing upright (vertical), but on other dials the arabic numbers rotate around (so that the 6 is upside down, at the bottom).
What are the technical names for these two different types of orientations of arabic numbers? Thanks |

GREAT QUESTION!!
I wondered the exact same thing. My DJ has the numbers that rotate as you go around the dial. I call that "Radial" or "tangental" vs. "straight": where they're all facing up at the same time. But I'm not sure what they're truely called. I know "radial" is probably not a good term to use because there's a style of DJ dial called "Radial" that has rays eminating from the center likes rays of a sun... Does anyone know?? |

I think it's called "concentric".

Well, mine (which has the numbers the right way up is the standard black arabic dial. I believe, however, this dial design is no longer available, and has been pulled from the current master catalogue.
Now, the other arabic dial that you commonly see is the arabic concentric dial, which has a textured effect on it, and numerals (filled with lume) that rotate with the dial. I believe this is pretty much the only arabic style you can get now, off the top of my head Best wishes Chris |

Well, yeah...But I bet horologists have a fancy name for this. And inquiring minds want to know...
I've done some digging, and "radial orientation" seems to be the preferred term. Some watches use a third option, called flip radial: http://www.tz-uk.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=57554 |

Actually this is the only Arabic dial with this orientation according to the catalog. I have seen white in the past. Currently, the concentric come in black, silver or blue backgrounds.

For datejusts, concentric works better imho.

That's true. Not that I think of it: "concentric" refers to the concentric textured rings of the dial. So I guess we're back to square 1.
I think we've got off track from thread initiator's original point here. What is the term for this "radial" orientation of the arabic numbers. What happened is we started naming the dials in general... |
