Interesting '50s Oyster
Just arrived today from an excellent vintage dealer in Bangkok, this ref. 6480 steel Oyster (34mm) from 1958. I love the quartered linen Explorer dial...
A family portrait (with my 1958 Air-King ref. 5500)...

No, '64 was. I just like late '50s styling.

Really beautiful and special. I have to ask an incredibly stupid Q - is the dial really 'linen', as in cloth? or does 'linen' describe the texture or style?

I actually have two rivet 7205 bracelets (currently on an Air-King and an Oysterdate), and tried the one with 57 end pieces with this watch, but the end pieces didn't fit well. The other has 60/61 end pieces, but I haven't tried it yet. I just ordered a gray padded ostrich strap to try with it, though this shell cordovan doesn't look too bad.

Very nice watch!
The dial and hands are in great condition for a >50 year old piece. Enjoy that rare beauty! |

Like you, I think the vintage Rolex (esp. the non 'sports' models) can look good on straps, and tend to flip mine between straps and bracelets. The strap you have on in the pics looks good - makes it stand out more than it would have on a bracelet. Would be interesting to see it on the new grey strap.

similar watch
I have a similar watch. Serial number indicates it's from 1951. Face has that somewhat similar texture as yours which I've seen called waffle. I had my cleaned by a watch maker and it's running fast so I need to talk with him again. I love the sweep of the second hand.

Hi Adam. May I respectfully suggest that you do not let this lovely piece anywhere near water. There are signs that water has already entered and there is rust visible around the glass/bezel area @ the 4 o/c position (brown staining). Get it sorted out and enjoy wearing it. Well done. Tylden.

Tylden, yes I saw that too on the enlarged photographs. All my vintage stay quite dry, don't worry. At the next service I will have it checked out and that area cleaned.
Here's a later picture, on the ostrich strap. By the way, I now think a more accurate term for this dial is a quartered gilloche.
