Anybody else feel compelled to sell when they buy?

Hey guys,

I've monkeying around with buying, selling, trading Rolex for about 5 years now but no matter how many times I trade I always get the compulsion to sell something off when I am getting something in.

For example. I have been rotating my Z serial Sub ND COSC and my DJ 16013 (Which was a present) since the end of last year. Yesterday I traded my Sub ND for an M serial Sub Date. I'm finding that the date feature is uber convenient for me so I'm excited to get it in. And I'm starting a new job, gonna be doing some more travel and it's a nice convenience and a nice reward for my hard work.

So here's the thing: I threw some money in on the trade, I need to get an appraisal done, and I need to ship my watch. So there is some investment involved. Despite the fact that I can afford this I still feel like I have to sell something off to make-up the difference in the spend. As a matter of fact I have it in my mind now all the things I am going to do to make up for the spend (mow my own lawn all summer, do my own mulch, no golf this year, ....) Is anyone else like this? I think if I sell the DJ my family is going to kill me since they think they gave it to me as a gift (I sourced it myself and the wife wrapped it up) They may disown me if I sell my own birthday gift.

Kind of - I always end up trading up though, so although the number of Rolex's I have has dwindled the quality increases and I end up paying + cash for every trade.

I'm beginning to feel this way, but since my collection is just now starting to grow it's hard for me to consider parting with any of my pieces. But like you, I have recently been debating which activities I can reduce in an effort to indulge my watch obsession. That being said, if I don't slow down a bit and show some restraint I'm sure I'll be right where you are now in regards to making difficult decisions.

But beyond all of that, congratulations on the new incoming Sub!

I have a set dollar figure involved in my watches so I pretty much always sell a watch when I get another. I try and sell first, makes it harder to change my mind. I get bored and sell or trade, or something comes up that I really want but it will almost always require the release of a current one. I really have no "keepers" as such.
I have other hobbies and interests so I don't want to over commit to watches at the expense of other things.

I am the exact same way. The only way that I can justify buying another watch is when I sell one to make up most of the difference. My main thought is that I have a wife and 3 kids, they deserve to be spoiled more than me. When I think about buying another watch, I can easily think of 10 ways that the money could be better spent, but I do work hard and you have to have hobbies right? I am at max a 3 watch guy, not counting G-Shock beaters, more than that and I feel guilty.

Only when I trade one watch that is rarely worn to acquire one that will part of my rotation. More and more I've decided life it to short for watches that just sit. The exception, of course, for very old vintage pieces only worn on special occasions.

It's funny the way you can justify it. I am a 2 watch guy. I tell myself that buying pre-owned I have spent less on 2 watches than most of my co-workers have spent on 1 at an AD. But like someone else pointed out I always think I could put the $$ towards something for the kids. It's just a guilt thing not a financial one! I figure this is my only real hobby other than occasional fly fishing and beer drinking which I don;t count as a hobby in so much as a life style!

Never sell your DJ. It was a gift. I can't imagine anyone would EVER sell a gift and be at ease with themselves.

Yep, all my purchases past the 1st one have involved some form of trade-ins. 2-3 Rolex is all I ever really need/want, so makes sense to trade out for incoming chnages.

Problem is that oftentimes for me, when "i sell", "i miss", and then "i re-buy".

I have now stopped doing the sell part unless i really dont like the watch for some reason. I am just trying to selectively add to the collection when i can afford to.

Sometimes I'm more concerned with having another box to find room for than I am another watch in the watch box...........

I am exactly like you in this regard. It's because of this that I need to make good decisions about watches that I acquire. I want to employ the 'no looking back' sort of attitude but it's sooo hard at times.

The watches are in their individual green pouches safely tucked away in the little safe. The box storage has now become a problem!!

I've never sold a watch for fear of seller's remorse.

I only trade when I find something redundant. Like when i got the SD and found it too similar to my Sub, one of them had to go.
