Explorer II vs Omega Speedmaster Pro
Greetings all,
New to the Rolex section of the forum, but I am new to the high-end watch arena, and am in a position to purchase my first one. I am not looking to purchase new, as this is the only watch seeing wrist time. I am torn between the Explorer II white dial vs the Speedmaster Professional 3570.50.00 by Omega. I was pretty much set on purchasing the Omega until I saw an Explorer II white in person. They're both beautiful watches, but I'd like everyone's opinion on these two. They are obviously very different. Given the name and function differences, I'd like to hear what everyone has to say about it. Thanks to all. |

They are pretty different watches, especially with the white dial....The Omega has its fans, but, I am partial to the more rugged Explorer II....Plus, it's a Rolex.
Good luck with your choice! |

The Exp II is arguably Rolex's most under-rated sports model. It's traditionally been less popular than the others like the Submariner or GMT supposedly because of the fixed bezel (versus the GMT II, which shares the same movement but offers a rotatable bezel) but IMO it's a great watch that offers the option of switching dials between white and black if you so desire. An added advantage is its very lack of appeal because it means you'll be able to buy it at a decent discount.
The Speedy Pro is of course, Omega's most famous watch but its drawbacks are that there's no date and it's a manual wind. I'm not sure about pricing but I believe Omega has recently been strict with its ADs on the amount of discounts they can give. |

On a daily basis, I have very rarely needed a timer. On the other hand, an independent 24 hour hand is something I would use all the time.

not a speedy, i know.... but if you like the white dial.. there is a (now discontinued) seamaster with white dial, GMT, similar bezel as the exp II.. you can still find them on TZ, WN.. and other places. really super looking watch IMO. so it would be a tough choice if i had this one sitting next to the exp ii (white dial).. IMO the bracelet on the seamaster line is much more substantial than on the exp ii line.

Difficult one to give advice on as they are two quite different types of watches. I have a speedy pro and was seriously considering an EXP 2 before I went with a PAM88. If I had to make the choice between them as my only watch I would go with the EXP 2 (auto, date), if it were a choice for a 2nd watch I'd go with the speedy pro (truly iconic).

Two totally different watches. White dial vs. black; chrono vs. non; sapphire vs hesalite; Rolex vs. Omega, the list goes on.
Both great watches, so you can't go wrong with your decision. Which one sings to you? Hey, save enough and you can get both! Happy Hunting. |

I have the EXPII and the Speedy Pro. Both are great watches but the Speedy Pro is my "precious".
No other watch has the Speedy's pedigree, history, and mystery. It is the "untouchable" in my collection and will eventually belong to one of my grandsons. The EXPII fills the GMT niche in my collection and like the Speedy Pro, it is an icon among watches. It is underrated but like every Rolex, overpriced. Fr. John† |

Since you aren't looking to purchase new you could possibly pick up both used for the price of a new EX II. Used Speedy's are usually well below MSRP. It just depends on how old you're willing to go.

Between the Speedmaster and ExpyII I'd take the Rolex. My only reason for that is because I use the date feature far more than a chronograph feature. Best to ask yourself if either of those issues will push you in one direction or another. In the end, however, you really can't go wrong with either piece.

The Speedy Pro is a cult watch and has been carried over to ride on Omegas 60's NASA connection.. A true classic, but, as has been said.... you need to wind it every morning, it has a plastic crystal, and there isn't a date if you like that sort of thing..
The Explorer II is bulletproof with a tried and true automatic COSC movement. Value performance over 20 years beats out almost every other Rolex model except the exotics.. Plus, it's a Rolex... It's up to you to decide what you want to wear on your wrist every day, every place................

If you decide on the Omega , think about the 3573 model... not much more $$ , and it has a crystal top ( not saying its better than hessalite but its like the rolex ) and it has a clear crystal back which is kind of cool...especially for your first watch

Very different pieces, but I think a question to ask yourself --is waterproof important and will you need a dual timezone feature??
If WR is a factor the EXP II is the clear winner. Past that each has a unique history with IMO the Speedmaster being the stronger contender. Personally I find the Speedy a bit easier to read in all conditions, but that's just me. For me the clear winner in the bracelet catagory is the Explorer. I base that on ease and range of adjustability. Honestly I prefer the plastic crystal of the Speedmaster, but as a vintage guy I'm awfully biased. |

Thank you all for the responses. As many of you have already said, and admitted, they are completely different.
I am *wanting* to get both, however, at my age and current student status, it actually becomes a hassel (IE safe keepings). The Rolex, of course being a Rolex is a beauty, but so is the Omega. I have looked at their Seamaster line, but I just don't think it is for me. One of the reasons why I really like the Explorer line is simply because it is iconic and its lack of "hey I'm a rolex!" appeal. I agree, it is an underrated watch, so given that, what would you all consider as a fair price, say, on a 5-8 year old model without service on the Rolex? I can get a great deal if buying new on the Omega, but also a very fair price on used at just under $1700 for a 1998 model. |

I happen to know very little about Omega watches and only a little on Rolex models. I would go with the Rolex Explorer II because of it's reputation as a rugged go anywhere watch. If you buy a used one that is 5 to 8 years old and hasn't been serviced you will need to get it serviced right away which will add around $500.00 to the end price!!!

Again, thank you all for the responses.
I have an opportunity to pull the trigger on a P seriel (2001-2002) for $3400 out the door. It has had a full service. Does this sound like a fair deal? In any event, I am getting out of another hobby of mine, so that should reallocate some funds for my Omega! I guess some of you were right... Once the bug catches, it never leaves. |

A P serial for just over $3000 with a recent full service is not a bad price, sounds pretty fair actually.
As far as your decision, seriously buy one now and down the road pick up the other. They are both fantastic watches, but so different that owning both is the best option. It has been said over and over, all true watch lovers need to have a speedy pro in their collection. It is such a amazing watch, and the ability to change from the bracelet to straps is awesome.

I've owned both watches and they are quite different. The Explorer II is a great "I can do anything watch". I too, prefer it as it doesn't scream look at me I'm a Rolex. You don't have to worry about scratching the plastic crystal of the Speedy and the resale is good. The initial depreciation of an Omega is a killer, so I would recommend used if you go that route. Hard to compete with the Speedy’s history of timing the rocket thrust burn for atmosphere reentry of Apollo 13 when their computer was out. If you go with the Explorer II from the "F" series (late 2003) there are no holes on the lugs. Not a big deal, but I prefer no holes. Because it's newer around $3400 or slightly under. Take the time to check references and go with someone who has plenty of experience and references if you go used.
All the best and welcome to the forum.

Thanks again to all. You all have been very informative, helpful, and most importantly, friendly.
Does anyone know why Rolex dropped the use of lug holes? Any issues with vs without? I've done a bit of research, but couldn't find anything aside from personal preferene. Since $3400 out the door is a fair price for a "P" Explorer II, now the question is... Which one to get first. I would be going used on both routes, as I see no point really in purchasing safe queens. Omega $1700 out the door vs Explorer II for $3400. Decisions, decisions... I guess these are good options to have! PS, I contacted the seller of the Rolex, and he said the service was done prior to his acqusition at a Rolex center. If it wasn't serviced at a Rolex center, say, done in-house, should I be concerned about this potential purchase? Thanks again all. Last edited by thirsty5; 12 May 2010 at 04:10 AM.. 1) If it was serviced at an RSC then there should be some service papers with it. 2) The seller said it was done before he got it, so how long ago was that? Remember, Rolex watches should usually be serviced once every 5-7 years. 3) If the seller has no paper work to prove the service was carried out by an RSC or any other reputable watchmaker, you should probably include the price of a service in your cost estimate. Now, putting the price of the watches aside, which one do you really want? If you are eventually going to get both watches anyway, then get the one that you really want first. Easy

As for service, there are differing opinions. Personally, I would insist on a Rolex service because these days, the company gives a 2-year warranty after servicing - plus you'll have full assurance that the watch is genuine. That piece of paper issued by Rolex (it's actually a card now, not paper) might stand you in good stead if you decide to sell the watch in the next couple of years. However, others might disagree with me, especially on grounds of cost - Rolex's servicing is expensive (for an average tune-up, you're looking at US$350 at least). And I'm sure there are many competent watchmakers who can do a great job on a Rolex. |

Thank you all again for the responses. They are all informative.
The seller of the Explorer II does not have any paper work to support the service from RSC. The Omega fell through as the seller was dishonest and did not inform me of the nicks and dings on the watch. I can, however, walk with a $2500 brand new Speedmaster. Again, I'm not too proud of the fact the Omega will lose almost $500 as soon as it goes on my wrist. It is a watch, however, that I will keep for life. After all, it is my first high-end watch. The Explorer II is on eBay, http://cgi.ebay.com/Stainless-Rolex-...#ht_7344wt_939 Can anyone comment on this piece? |
