Need a new laptop....PC or Mac?
Guys, need your feedback. I'm shopping around for a new laptop. I currently have a Sony Vaio which I will most likely pass onto my 8 yr old.
I've got an Apple desktop now. I love it. Best of all.....no viruses! Never a slow down, never a hiccup. At the same time, I don't want to give up my "PC" privileges. I'm concerned that if I lean towards another mac product, there's no turning back. Although I do like both macbook & macbook pro. A bit costly compared to others, but think its worth it? Appreciate your input. |

bought my wife a 15" Macbook Pro (one of those iCore7 thingy) on the same day when i picked up my SS GMTIIC - she is loving it.
i have used a few times, and i have always gone back to my Sony Vaio - old habit i guess.... its easier to navigate in "my" familiar environment when all my softwares are in the "right" place (the Macbook Pro is abit software-less for me atm). eventually i will be making my fiinal transision over to the Mac Pro. love the dashboard function! probably end up replacing the Vaio with a 13" Mac Pro later. imo - is you have an Apple desktop, maybe a Macbook/Pro would be a sensible choice? |

I have always owned Windows PC's and laptops (heck, right now I have a Thinkpad T61, and X301). BUT my next laptop will most likely be a MacBook Pro. Although for quality and durability I have a REALLY hard time looking outside the Thinkpad market. And unfortunately, you can only get Windows (or Linux) with a Thinkpad.

PC based systems are 93% of the market..... I'll stick with mine as they're easy to upgrade and you can get peripherals practically anyplace...

I just changed jobs, and the new company bought me a 15.4" Macbook Pro. Core i7 2.66, 4GB RAM, 500GB drive, etc... Magic mouse, etc...
It's very nice. I also have VMware Fusion 3.1 and Windows 7 Professional on it. It has lived up to my expectations so far which were: -Very good battery life without a protruding "brick" battery -Multi-touch trackpad and magic mouse are -FANTASTIC- -Native displayport is doing a great job of driving my 2560x1440 27" monitor -Incredible boot and sleep times (less than 30 sec boot, 1-2 sec sleep/resume) -Uber fast WiFi acquisition (much better than Win7 with Intel WiFi chipset) The only somewhat negative surprise I found is that Linux distros don't support the hardware well. I really hadn't anticipated that at all. The lack of a VGA port is kinda weak too - how are you supposed to drive a projector to present at a customer site? The company got me an adapter ($30) but the adapter seems like the kind of thing that should have been included with the laptop at that price. Oh, and Office Mac 2011 (beta5) is -AWESOME-. Full Outlook application at last!!! |

Oh, and FWIW - avoid the new Apple 27" LCD like the plague.
I have the Dell version and it's -vastly- superior. First off, there's only one input on the Apple. ONE! One displayport - that's it. My Dell has 1 displayport, 2 DVI, 1 HDMI, Component, Composite, and VGA. The Apple is only 24bit (16.7Mil colors) The Dell is 30bit (1.07Bil colors) I could go on... |

Wow! The overwhelmingly majority leans towards the mac!
In reading up with cnet reviews etc. seems though the mac is more $$ than its competition but built quality & production time is far more superior. That says a lot! Thanks guys for all your feedback! |

You wont regret the small extra cash it costs to get the better product no matter what Rooney says. He asked Bill Gates out on a date so he's biased anyway.

There are arguments to be made for both Mac and pc. All I can say is my imac 15 pro just plain works all the time.
My hard drive is partitioned w/ VM ware to run Windows when that's needed for work. The best of both worlds. dP

I need to have MS Office. Would it make more sense to purchase the Office for Mac or just buy the Parallels software?
I already have a MS Office disk. So, I guess it makes more sense to opt for the later since it opens up my options? |

I have Windows Office of Mac and it works great. I only use VM ware when running a program I can't run on the Mac. And it runs slower like a pc. dP

You see, it's impossible for someone to post a "Mac vs PC" or "what computer/phone should I get" without every Apple fan responding and letting you know how they all "Think Different". The moment anyone posts anything other than 100% Apple rhetoric, they are abused. Most PC/Linux owners aren't responding because they don't care if you don't join their club. Here are the facts: Macs and PC's use the same components, including processors. A bad sector on either's hard drive, and you are going to lose data/performance. This is how most computers lose performance. You use a web browser to connect to the internet. All the web browsers are available on Mac or PC. Both Microsoft and Apple make particularly bad ones. Best to stick to Firefox or Chrome. For web browsing, hardware and OS platform is pretty irrelevant. Macs cost more. Take time to consider what you are really getting for the extra money (see hardware, point 1). Macs don't last as long. I don't mean hardware failure. I mean, Steve Jobs will decide when he wants you to get a new Mac. Try running Snow Leopard on a 5 year old Powerbook (you can't). Try running Leopard on a Powerbook (it's dog slow). Try running iOS 4 on a 3G iphone (also a dog). Meanwhile Windows 7 or Ubuntu Linux runs like a dream on my 6 year old HP laptop. Apple is a brand. How many computer makers include a car window sticker with their computers or phones? I guess I find their Cult of Personality marketing style a bit insulting. So, you need Microsoft Office to do actual work, so you are going to spend the extra money to have Windows on parallels or VMWare? Seriously? |
