Guys did i do the right thing?
Hi everyone, im new to the rolex world. My wife took me to a non ad , jewlery store but well known for selling used rolex, and bought me a 2006 GMT pepsi ss with papers" that had previous owners name on it from rolex" Well after 2 days it gained 55 seconds, way out of spec. The price on the pepsi was 3800.00. So i brought it back and bought a green bezel " lv" submariner for 5300.00, but with no papers and no box, I didnt like the idea of no papers but the dealer said the submariner Lv was discontinued and very hard to get. So i jumped on it. Question is would you have been turned of by a 2006 gmt that gained 55seconds in two days. Question 2 is are the Lv subs hard to get and did i get a good deal at 5300.00 for a no paper Lv sub in perfect condition with hollogram sticker on back. Thanks so much for the help. P.s was the 2006 pepsi gmt II rare?

Personally i wouldn't buy any rolex without papers. The resale value plummets. I'd get it checked and as long as your happy with it thats all that matters.

That was a bit of a steep price for the LV. I believe for that price, you could've found one with a complete set of boxes and papers.
As for the GMT, it probably needs a service to get it to run within COSC specs. Congrats on the LV! |

I would not have been turned off by the GMT. If I loved the watch I would have tried to get the dealer to have it regulated at his cost. AS for the box and papers issue, its a non starter if you are sure it is an authentic Rolex. I buy watches because I love them and wear them, not as an investment. If it gains in value and I sell it ...so much the better. With so make fake Rolexes and papers out there I follow the advice so often given here buy the seller more than the watch.

Well the papers dont always mean that the watch is genuine papers are easily faked.Papers with modern watches when bought used are not as important as getting a genuine watch. And after the warranty period they are just papers or cards, now when you have the watch serviced you will get service papers. The service papers are a good record in a watch being original genuine Rolex.

The gmt did seem like a good deal and the dealer said he would sent it to " his guy " to regulate it, but i didnt feel all that good about someone other than rolex to start opening up the case and start rooting around in there to regulate it and seal it back up..

Welcome to the forum Bob. You only made a mistake if you didn't get the one that sang to you like Dan P said. The GMT may have needed a service is all or may not have been fully wound Like Padi said.
B&P Mean very little if the watch is genuine. Yeah it's nice but to repeat again ROLEX Serivice papers are just as good. Get the watch that really turns you on.

I'm with Dan here. I don't care about papers as long is the watch is real. But I do think you made the right choice, I think I may have done the same thing.

The GMT is 3 watches in 1 (pepsi, coke or all black). You could have told them to have it regulated. The price for the LV was a bit steep in my opinion.

I could still bring it back and get the gmt after they regulate it. I was just worried about the jewlery store opening it up and fishing around in there. I did think the gmt was a good deal.

Hi Bob, I can understand how you feel! Papers are important for authentification! But if you are sure of their authenticity then i guess it doesn't matter.
Both the GMT pepsi and LV sub green dial are great watches in their own rights when it comes to rarity and looks. Others please correct me if i'm wrong, but the Pepsi GMT II will continue to be rare as long as Rolex doesn't crack the problem of a dual color Cerachrom bezel! Even then the aluminium bezel Pepsi dial will be celebrity in its own right! And the LV sub is rare as well...i checked the 2009-2010 Rolex dial sheet sheet and you don't have a green sub dial that you can swap! So the only green dial subs you can get will be with the aluminium bezel (16610LV) or ceramic bezel (116610LV)! If you can go back on the deal, then as Patrick has mentioned above, go with the one that looks good on you, coz thats what is going to put a smile on your lips each time you see it on your wrist! If possible get the watch authenticated. If you cannot go back on the deal, assuming its an authentic Rolex, then you shouldnt worry either - the sub is a cult Rolex, probably one of the references that have seen more professional use (military, underwater photographers et cetera) than many others! And you have one that commenmorated the 50th anniversary of this model! Future value of a watch is important, but in my opinion it should carry less weightage compared to how a watch feels on your wrist! I hope this has been of help! Best Regards... |

Well Bob there is nothing mysterious about a Rolex movement. Fact its quite a large movement and because of its construction far easier to service than many others. And to a watchmaker its much like any other movement and getting the back off if you have the correct tool quite easy done. Most good high street watchmakers will have the correct tools and many will have the pressure testing facilities too.And to regulate a watch with a timing machine is quite a simple task for any watchmaker. The main problem today is Rolex has such a tight strangle hold on getting Rolex parts. But to service or regulate a Rolex is no harder or easier than many other movement on the market today.

If you did in fact like the GMT better...take back the overpriced LV and then get the Pepsi serviced by a Rolex Service center. Either San Francisco or Dallas. For another $550-650 you will have a brand new classic of a watch!!!

Watches will need routine service. A movement service by a good watchmaker is all it needs.
LV price is a bit steep for an incomplete package. |

I am always leery of a watch without original card/paper with serial number and box. I just fear it was stolen and the only way to know is by sending it to Rolex. Yeah, yeah, yeah, I am sure someone can steal one with the box & all but if your home is robbed I doubt he will grab the watch and start looking for a box for better resale. Plus, I assume no AD or Non-AD has the power to check Rolex's database for stolen watches.
2006 ("D" I assume) GMT SS Pepsi sounded like a better deal.

I have to agree with most above...The GMT maybe only needed to be regulated!!
The price on the LV was high IMO...
