Popular/Common Models

Which Rolex model do you believe is the "poster child" for Rolex? In other words, what model do "lay people," or commoners think of when someone says Rolex? Along that line, which model do you think someone would buy if they just wanted a Rolex to say they have a Rolex.

I think it would be a TT Datejust with champagne dial followed closely by a Submariner.

I'd say they're the most recognisable

I think the first post nailed it. This is what made me think I didn't like Rolex until I really dug in and found models I like.

I think the Datejust is the bred and butter model of Rolex, taking into account models for ladies and men.

I'm fairly certain you're right. The Sub is probably the most popular among forum members, but TT models, especially the DJ on a jubilee bracelet, are probably what most people want, the Day-Date being out of reach from a price standpoint for the majority of buyers.

Well I can speculate or go from personal experience. The rolex I see most commonly is the GMT 2C. Now there's a surprise.

I have to say that over the decades the DJ on Jubilee has to be the watch that is most emblematic of Rolex.

The Sub to me is a close second, but its extreme popularity in the last twenty years will probably eclipse the DJ.

I'd say that is due in large part to the fact that as hard as times are today, more young people who are attracted to sports models are able to afford a Rolex.

That seems like a paradox considering all the complaints we hear about price increases and the economy, but I do believe it to be true.

I understood 'popular' as ubiquitous, not necessarily favored or desired.

I would say the SS Sub but I read somewhere that the DJ have an edge
in the sales numbers & they each lead their segment.

I said DD because that is what I became aware of first and it made a lasting impression.

DJ would be a close second, but I would agree that it's probably #1 for the world at large.

I worked at a Rolex AD in the early 80s (in the repair department sizing rings and replacing batteries, lol). I bet they sold 10 Datejusts for every one of all other Rolex models combined.
