DJ Date Change

I've had my DJ for less than two months, but I've never checked to see when the date actually changed or whether or not it did so instantaneously.

I know that there have been many a discussion of this, but still I wanted to take the time to see for myself.

At exactly 0002:28 the date changed instantaneously.

I don't know how far that varies from the norm, but it was really quite impressive, as I've never had a watch with a date that changed with so abruptly.

I'm not really inclined to sit up till midnight looking at my watch for several minutes to confirm this, myself, but I'm wondering what range of times that this change takes place for those with Rolex watches with the date feature.

Anyone else ever check this out?

You can also manually set your watch to 11:50pm and then you only have to wait a few minutes to watch the date change. Saves a lot of missed sleep.

My Explorer II changed dates at fifteen seconds past midnight on the dot. My current DJ changes dates at 11:58.

Padi, mine changes exactly at noon. I'm usually still awake by then.

I'm in agreement, as I've never thought to check it out before, but Rolex has made something of a deal about the instantaneous change.

It hardly matters to me personally, as I'm almost never up that late or interested in what my watch is doing if I am.

I was just curious whether or not all watches changed at the approximate time or not, or even if the same watch changes at the same time each night or day, for that matter.

I must admit that the abrupt change was cool to watch, as I'm accustomed to my watches taking an hour or three to make the change.

The time they change differs if you are watching it.

If you really want to know what time it happens you have to sneak up on it so it doesn't know you are there.

A watched watch date-wheel never changes at midnight?

I'll buy that.

I think it has something to do with when the hands were attached to the stem. They'd have to be put on in the midnight configuration when the date changes wouldn't they?

Actually, I'm not sure what the variables are.

I won't lose any sleep trying to figure it out, but the next time I'm up at midnight I'll check it out again, just to see.

And no, I'm not going to set my watch to 2350 during the day to see. That's more trouble than checking it out when I'm up late.

It could well be the case and it might have something to do with how well wound the watch is when it comes time to change, as that has to take a certain amount of energy.

Quadruple post.

The consensus seems to be that the date change should take place +/- 5 minutes from midnight. Mine is presently changing +/- 45 seconds from midnight.

Thanks, I had heard of some parameter, but I couldn't remember.

I'm up late tonight, too, so I'll check it out again, just for grins.

Hi Grady,

It would be virtually impossible to find any 2 Rolex watches that would change their dates at exactly the same time.

Every Rolex is going to have some kinda variation which is usually a minute or two before mid-night, or a minute or two after.

Furthermore, it's NOT going to be consistent even with the SAME watch which will show variations in date change around the witchin' hour.

Good Info again, JJ.

Thanks.

The date switch is cool whenever it occurs.

The only variable is quite simple, the date change over is mechanical, and not electronic.
