Why Cant I hold onto a Rolex?

Hello Guys,

I have quite a problem on my hands here. I am not a huge collector but enjoy having a few watches in my collection. I have had the following over the years:

1) Rolex Classic Jubilee Datejust with white roman dial. K series serial bought it pre owned, it was my first nice watch and I got it when I was about 22 in 2002. After selling this I did not really have any nice watches until the sub no date purchase in 2009.

2) Submariner 14060M No Date. Z Serial bought it pre owned in 2009 and sold it about 6 months later. Not to crazy about the clasp on it.

3) GMT II-C random serial purchased in September 2010 brand new and sold it about three weeks later!

Now my question is what is it about Rolex that makes me sell them? This year i purchased a classic Breitling Navitimer and Omega sapphire speedmaster both brand new and have no intention on selling either of them. I have a small wrist and I am not sure if the 40mm thing bothers me or what. Either way I need some help, should I try the new Sub-C or possibly even a pre owned 16610? Not sure but I dont want to give up on Rolex yet. I figured (3) watches is good for me so this would be my last for a while. Not sure what to do!!

Perhaps the ones you bought are not the ones you really like. It happens, and not everyone is into Rolex too..

I have owned over a dozen Rolex sport watches and keep flipping them also so I am not going to be much help. What I can contribute is that once I got over the Rolex bug, I started to really appreciate other brands that to be honest, just feel better on the wrist.

Panerai is by far my favorite brand, then it's a close second between IWC and Rolex, with Omega and Blancpain rounding out my favorite brands. Maybe Rolex isn't the brand for you, there is nothing wrong with that, diversity is great in a watch collection.

IMHO, a Rolex only watch collection is a very boring watch collection. You would be missing out on all the options that other brands offer, like owning a handful of straps for you Panerai, it's pure joy.

I do think the sub c is a really great watch, and I have been really thinking about picking one up soon. I have been trying to fight the temptation, and the price point is the only thing holding me back. I am either going to buy the new sub, or a Panerai 351, but I can't get over how stunning the 351 is, and the prices are pretty much the same.

See, I'm like you, you appreciate many brands, like a true WIS should. That is a good quality IMHO, buy the watch you like and don't try to impress others with brand recognition. Best of luck with your decision.

It happens.

Sometimes it take awhile to find the 'right' watch(es). Unfortunately, the wallet gets lighter in the process.

Good Luck!

Sub C on a 6.5" wrist is just right for me

Also have an Omega Seamaster Pro 2254.50 which is 41mm which is extremely comfortable for me. This SMP looks bigger than the Sub C. I find both are just fine on my 6.5" wrist.

You should try one on and then you can make the decision yourself.

Why do you keep buying Rolexes then?

Don't buy Rolex then, but really it's different strokes for different folks I guess.

Rolex just does it for me. Elegant and timeless design. Very minimalistic. Don't look at other brands other than Omega, although I could be tempted by IWC and JLC.

Personally I can't stand the sight of PAM, Breitling, AP, Franck Muller, B&R etc.

Rolex design, for some, may be an acquired taste. I have found that I really appreciate the beauty and uniqueness of the design as I have learned more about the watch. I have other nice watches but they just don't get the wrist time my Rolexes do.

I have a similar experience owned and sold in a few months a M series Rolex Sub Date ,a Z series Rolex Sub no date,Tudor Sub circa 1990, among others. I have a small wrist and find the Triplock models sit too high on my wrist and move arround resulting in discomfort. I now have settled on an EXPll and a GMTll 16710 both sit lower, no roll no movement, no discomfort. I also have a Tudor Chrono (triplock)and it sits higher as well but the down turned lugs make it sit properly on the wrist so no moving arround or rolling. My conclusion the Triplock models without down turned lugs are not for everyone.

I too love the sapphire Speedy so no problems there. I wear it when I run as I can read the subdials unlike most chronographs, so although it is not a daily wear it gets wrist time 4 to 5 times a week. Breitling Navitimer is a tad busy for me, and resale is going to hurt you, but as long as you are happy is all that matters. I cringed when I read that you sold the 14060M, as it has such a clean honest face, but again whatever gets you through the night. Best wishes on your watch enthusiasm.
