Probably First and Last Rolex, what to get?
Hi Guys
I'm trying to get my first and probably last rolex... My budget is 10k and I am torn between Rolex Daytona SS Black Dial and Rolex GMTIIc SS. I already have one chronograph (Omega Speedmaster) and am wondering which is the watch I need. I have this bad feeling that if I buy GMTIIc SS, I will regret why I didn't buy, well, more expensive, Daytona when I could. But, to give it a second thought, I was fascinated by Rolex because of its simple watches (with mercedes hour hand) and cyclops on the date window. Argh. What should I get? |

Welcome to the forum. If you need a date then get the GMT if not then get the Daytona.

If price us your only consideration, go with the daytona. Based on your criteria, it sounds like the GMT might be what you really want. Go try both of them on and you will know. The new Sub might also work for you too. Most expensive doesn't always equal the best watch for a person.

Both are excellent for their intended purpose. Gotta decide which is for you.

Both have a lot of fans. For me, I chose the GMTIIC because of the larger presence on the wrist and the date function.
If you prefer a smaller watch and don't need the date function, go with the Daytona. |

My biased suggestion is the GMTIIc. I love mine!

IMO, if people buy a watch simply because it's the "more expensive" compared to another, then those individuals have their priorities messed up & care more about what others may think as opposed to just doing what will make themselves happy (not to mention the vast majority of people wouldn't know the price difference of a Daytona vs GMT anyway). Your dilemma is a prime example. I LOVE chrono's, but I would take the GMT over the Daytona because I absolutely must have a date function on my watch and the Daytona (on my wrist) just looks too small. The fact that the GMT costs significantly less is a plus in my eyes...lets you save some cash to use for something else (like a plane ticket to travel on vacation to try out that 2 timezone feature of the GMT). |

It's a matter of taste...both are very nice in different ways. I'll admit I prefer a watch with a date and full size second hand (love to watch it go around), so I now have a SS GMTIIc which I haven't tired of. At the same time I admire the Daytona SS Black.
Make a few visits to your AD and do the mirror test (check how it looks on you from a third angle with a small and full body mirror) which helped me eliminate a few choices that I thought looked good on my wrist. Ha, you say you will only have one Rolex, and I thought that too, but I recently just bought my third...the quality is addictive! Good Luck |

With your budget, get the daytona. If you change your mind down the line, you can sell it and get the GMT II and have money left over since daytona keep their value well. Then you can get a second watch...

For around your budget, and only Rolex, I'd go for a preloved Day-Date.
