Yes same old Question, which rolex do you get first.

Cop from NY, should be retiring soon, wanting to you know what is the best Rolex to buy first and why? I'm going to chill in NY for a couple more years, waiting for my girls to get into collage and then I then want to go out West, with my Lovely Wife Kelly, I Like the GMT and the classic coke Bezel. Does it ever feel a little trendy and you don't want a watch that stands out like that, I love the Submariner, and the whole true affiliation with James Bond. Big Watches are cool. I have quite a few. What you Rolex veterans think?

GMT with coke bezel works for me, maybe all-black bezel if you want to be a little more discreet.

I'm a Sub guy all the way, so I would vote for a classic 16610 or even the new SubC if you're a fan of ceramic.

Best to buy first? Well, I'd say the YG Day Date. If you don't like gold and "dressy watches" you can't go wrong with a Subbie.

Submariner or a GMT coke. Awesome, right for every occasion.

Don't overlook the Datejust, with the range of dials, metals, bezels and bracelet combinations to choose from, you can really make it reflect yourself. If your heart was set on a sports watch though, a GMT II (ceramic or pre-ceramic) is a pretty prudent choice - versatile, dependable and reliable

I don't really car for gold, just not my thing. I of course do where a thumb ring, even while I worked as an officer. Just one of those things. I like the Uniqueness of the Fat Lady. Not a lot of them. I'm sure that if I had a GMT coke , an older one, and Rolex was finally able to get two colors on Ceramic, I would be bothered and have to be buying things.

Definately a Submariner 16610

GMT is a brilliant watch too but the Sub is the true classic and always a great first Rolex.

+1 My first choice would be (and is) a 16600 Sea Dweller, which is now discontinued = classic perfection. My second choice would be a new Submariner ceramic with the new bracelet and the Glidelock clasp = modern perfection. Good luck in your decision. Keep us posted.

Can't go wrong with a sub, it's a little more than I would want to wear to work, but it doesn't sound like that's a worry of yours for much longer.

BTW, is that your Defender?? I've always wanted a 90.

I would highly recommend one of the sports model for you, be it sub or gmt. I find GMT2 more practical, since it tracks 2 time zones. Highly recommend buy a used one from one of the reputable sellers on our forum. This way you can save couple pretty penny.

The best watch for you to get is the watch you like the most and the one you can afford.

There is my best first, his best first, and her best first.

Your best first might be something else entirely.

Have you tried any on?

I tried them all on and they all fit nicely. I'm a stocky little guy. I've slimmed down a little in the last year, but I still have the rapid metabolism. I wear my watch a little loose so everything fits. Tough

Alot of Rolex watches are tool watches so most do a pretty good job, however you might want to stick with the SS versions of Deep Sea, SubC, GMTIIC, Explorer, or Milgaus.

It is a Defender in the Picture that one of my daughters behind the wheel. There are less than 10,000 in the US. Both kids scheming to find a way to inherit it. It is a car that I've wanted since I was a kid.

Is the 3186 movement of a gmt 2 worth the extra cash over the 3185 one?

Buy the one you love the most. For me in a very active outdoor lifestyle - the Explorer II covered my needs - and comes in your choice of white or black face...

Not to me, unless you are a collector. Most of the changes (blue spring, tighter gears, etc) are hardly noticeable.

Let's look at this from a logical perspective. If you're going to become a world traveller after retirement, the GMT might be the way to go so you know what time it is back home.

If not, go for the Sub!

What is the notable change in recent memory to the submariner that makes it so much better, or is just hype?

Another cop from New York. I AM retired. My suggestion...Rolex Submariner. Take your pick. Date, no date, two tone, LV. Doesn't matter. It will fit all your needs. If you insure it, wear it in the street. Believe me it will stand up. Make sure you get one with superluminova so you can see the time when you are writing reports in the car at night. Best of luck Brother! You will love being retired. I guarantee! The only problem you will face is trying to remember you aren't a cop anymore. Those instincts die hard. Good luck with whatever Rolex you choose!

Go for the classics either a Datejust(there are lots of dials to choose from) or another classic is the SS Submariner. I went for the TT Datejust it's been my favorite since I was a kid. SS Sub is next on my list.
BTW I'm also retired from the job & loving it..

I am partial to the air king. It is timeless and can be dressed up or down. My next choice would be the sub.

I think a GMT Coke would be outstanding!! I have both the Coke and Pepsi on my short list. A nice Sea Dweller might be something you could consider and you can still sometimes find them BNIB from a dealer, even though they are now discontinued.....and BNIB/LNIB here, as well.

Or, you could always follow Bratton's lead......I'l bet one of our "TRF" experts can look at these pics and tell us what Rolex he wears!
