First Rolex: GMT Master II

Hey guys, got my first Rolex a couple of weeks ago as a Christmas bonus from my boss. It's an N series. I did the research on this particular model and surprised the jeweler that sold it to my boss with the questions I asked. He thought I would be concerned with the age of the watch and asked if I wanted a new dial with the luminova. I told him NO way. I would like everything as original as possible. Came with open papers. I was hoping to get a better understanding of what the means from a value and collectors perspective. What do you guys think?

Great choice. Love the lug holes.

As for value, I don't think the modern GMT II is at all rare, but, like all Rolex watches, holds its value fairly well...

The only thing I was confused on was the "open papers". My warranty information has the original AD info on it but not the purchaser and purchase date. I tried doing research on this and have come across multiple opinions. Ranging from it diminishes the value of the watch to it actually increases the value. Do you have guys have better understanding of "open papers"?

Open papers increases the value in many situations as the buyer often wants his/her name on the warranty. That said, a 1991 watch will not matter as the warranty card is expired. I believe a N GMT Master in above condition is 3350 if you sell privately, and less if you sell it to a wholesaler.

Thanks Daniel. I will probably leave the documentation as it came then. Although I don't mind the age of the watch I do wish I could tell the time at night. Oh well, guess I'll have to wait until my next watch. Until then I am definitely going to enjoy this time piece. It has a lot of character to it. I'm already debating which bezel insert to switch to next summer!

Congrats on such a great and versatile watch... You can always look into a coke and pepsi insert as well as a jubilee bracelet and have several watches in one

I agree, and I don't need it. So far I can't be happier with the watch. It has caused me to look into all of the history of where it came from. Pretty cool stuff.

Good for you. Cool history. Fun to get into it.

Consider a jubilee bracelet fir variety...and a Pepsi or coke insert as others suggested.

Great first Rolex to own! You can trade up anytime or just keep it and buy a second. The bonus of changing the insert to Coke or Pepsi as well as the bracelet to jubilee is the best part of Rolex! Wear it in good health.

I did have a question about leather bands. Im looking for a crocodile strap with a deployment clasp. I've seen some cool pics on TRF but don't know if it's kosher to copy the picture and put it in my post to show you guys. Do you all know of a place where I could shop around for band that would look great with my GMT?

Rolex does not make the kind of band you seek AFAIK. Omega does...as do others.

You can look around at ofrei.com

Chris, welcome to the Forum and I love your watch...as I too own a GMT Pepsi and it's the best. Also as stated you can change the bezel insert and the bracelet!!!
You can also buy Nato straps as well for your watch.....
