Rolex envy...
I've been to a few other forums and encounter some hostility towards Rolex's.
To me it dosen't matter what you own or wear and would never talk down about your watch. A co-worker has a TT Blue Folex yet I never spoke ill of it just surprised as he makes decent money. Do you think it's because they would like to own one but for whatever reason can't??? Don't mean to start-up any controversy here but why rag on someone rather than just move on.

I've noticed that hostility directed at Rolex reviews or comments on other forums too.

I haven't worn a watch in some time but for what ever reason this year I began again.
My watch of choice is my Wht. Exp. II, just love the looks and how it wears. Nothing personal just sayin..

There is something about the Rolex name, most likely it's enduring reputation that has elevated it above other more expensive things. People just can't help but be jealous, and or envious when they hear or see a Rolex. Example a person driving a very expensive car stops for a red light, looks over and see's you wearing a Rolex, makes a comment "A Rolex Ha!" Why? because there is just something about a Rolex!

The negativity derives from nothing more than jealousy, gentleman. It seems to me that these ''enthusiasts'', if you will, find some sense of false identity in the anonymity of these unknown, unproven and largely unpopular brands. But, we shant succumb to their negativity. We are proud of what we wear and take pride in knowing that we can appreciate others brands without casting the same scorn upon them as we have so undeservedly received.

Where do you drive? 99.99% of the very expensive car drivers I know (and as a member of a Royal yacht club I know a few) couldn't care less what watch you wear. To them it's an accepted accoutrement of their station in life and nothing to comment on or make a fuss about. It's just there. Part of life. Anybody making a big deal about a Rolex is tacky nuveau riche or trying to be, or a WIS watch nut like us.

Good question, there are two reasons why I have seen that people bash Rolex and neither I believe stem from any type of jealousy. One is that the bashing is directed at the stereotypical Texas Timex type owner that only buys the watch as a status symbol of wealth. They act like a jackass and think their poop doesn't stink because they have a crown on their wrist. The people that bash the brand for this reason are usually collectors of other brands, sometimes higher end stuff like PP, VC or Lange.
The second reason is because some owners of Rolex watches bring it on themselves by simply flat out refusing to believe that there is any brand on par with Rolex (the same can be said of many Panerai owners too). This narrow and short sided view brings out the bashers and puts them on the defense right off the bad. Then as always, you do have trolls that just like to start up shite for the sake of it. These people aren't worth the time of day to consider them bashing Rolex, they are just idiots. Quote:
"I view Panerai as a fad, a large, unsightly, fad, nothing more. They will never stand the test of time as Rolex has. Esthetically, they're rather displeasing and they seem to fail horribly in a practical sense, as their size and weight is a burden to the wearer. I believe that followers of this brand will soon wish they had made wiser investments in more established brands. Just my opinion here, ladies and gentleman." It is this view that can be reviewed as reason number two in my list. I fail to see appreciation for another brand in your statement, but I do sense alot of scorn.

I see a lot of 'other brand bashing' on the guitar forums I visit; this frequently comes from the uneducated newbie who has brainwashed himself into a state of hysterical denial that his brand could be anything other than vastly superior to anything else on the planet.
This guy is seldom a serious player and buys for peer approval and the perceived status his ownership bestows upon him. For me a guitar is my tool; it earns me money. I use quality instruments because they do the job reliably. My Rolex is my tool; it gets me to gigs on time! |

Jealousy is the reason non-WIS/everyday people disparage Rolex Case in point. Yesterday I was at a party with a bunch of people I've known since high school. We were sitting around watching TV and some guy asked me rather loudly, "Is that a Rolex? Can I see it" it was kind of embarrassing, but I remember how I was before I got my sub so I took it off and passed it to him. He said he was in banking now and wanted to get one to "upgrade his image" *shudder* Another guy who really don't like due to reasons to exhausting to mention here-wearing a Breitling-started up a conversation on how they wanted nice watches to show that they "had money". The guy with the Breitling was trying to elicit praise and attention on his Breitling by saying, "yeah I got this one at xyz store" but the guy holding my watch just said, "mmhmm," as he was oogling my Sub-Date which just fumed the guy with the chip on his shoulder and the Breitling on his writs. it was pretty funny. people hate what they cant or dont have.

Wis = Watch Idiot Savant. 1.A person self trained to sleep in 5 positions with wearing his/her COSC certified chronometer in bed. 2.A person who opens the back of a new Patek on the first day of acquisition and hand winds the rotor to tighten up the main spring. 3. A person who takes his 2000 meter water proof Rolex SD off from the wrist. And puts it into the deepest pocket, and three plastic bags before walking into a rain shower without any rain gear on. 4.A person who waits every 5 minute in front of his radio controlled clock in order to adjust all his/her 14 mechanical watches to the accuracy within -2/+2 seconds per 24 hours. 5. A person who can memorises all serial numbers of the Rolex watches made in the past 60 years but keeps forgetting the wifes wedding anniversary. 6.A person who washes his/her watch in luxury shampoo, polishes with a specially bought cloth. Then rests it on another specially bought cloth encase they scratch the stainless steel.

each person engaged in any brand bashing or calling out of others need to go to a charity website, where the charity feeds people who are starving
and donate a few bucks, or you could just do that anyway |
