sub problem (???)
have a sub about 7 yrs old. When the watch stops from not being worn, I need to knock it with my knuckles a few times after winding to get it ticking again. is this normal?

How long does it take to stop after not being worn? At about 7 years, it probably could use a servicing. The oils are probably not doing their job any more.

I will second Franks conclusion.
Of course if you always wear it you won't have that problem. |

Hi Hammet, welcome aboard!
The problem you're having starting your Rolex is probably due to you rapping it with your knuckles. Most horologists agree that the specialized equipment shown below is much more effective for re-starting the watch. It also comes with attachments to adapt it to various watch brands, as most require their own starting technique: . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .

That's quite normal with knock-offs That's why they are called "knock-offs"......you have to knock them to get them started!

After seven years one solution immediately comes to mind and that is service. Rolex recommends a regulation of the watch every 5-7 years, and you're already on the high end of that range. You may need to have some basic work done on the watch...oils, maybe a gasket or two. Did you buy the watch new?
Do you wear it every day? Also, how long does it stay running when you take it off? Have you dropped it or banged it hard? Is it fully wound? Welcome to the forum! |

so am i right in assuming that it should just "restart" by winding? I should not have to shake it or "rap" it to get it ticking again?

Its best to give it 20 turns to give it a good wind. I was talking to Cayce of Timekeeper and recommends giving our Rollies a good 20 turn wind once or twice a year.

My late fifties (or early 60s) datejust
hasn't been serviced since 1998...keeping great time. Might take it in just to see if Rolex will give it one more service...but that's the only reason to. If it isn't broken, don't fix it. If it is...do.

After all the jokes are put aside, the watch should restart after running down and rewinding without having to jar it. As everybody has indicated, it's probably time to send it to a RSC for a service.

It is absolutely in need of service. Exact same thing happened to my sub. Had to "bump" it to restart, and eventually it just stopped working. Serviced and now it is perfect.
