The more I see of the white dial Expl II, the more I think that will be my next watch.

Someone on the forum made the observation that in the sunlight, the white face is brilliant to the point that the cyclops glitters like a diamond.

I think that's an excellent description, and as a choice would offer a difference to the black dialed pieces I currently own.

My thought is, if I'm going to part with this kind of $$ for a watch, owing to my WIS-illness, then each choice should reflect something different than what I already have.

Besides, I truely believe that with the current blingification of the Rolex sports line, the Exp II will be phased out in 3 years or less. The Subs I believe will all come to have supercases, maxi dials and upgraded bracelets and clasps, along with ceramic bezels. But the Exp II wouldn't really take a ceramic bezel, its just too much of a departure, the silver colour is too difficult to do in ceramic, the shape of the Exp II bezel is more exposed to shock and as such might be the impact point for a cermaic-shattering force, and finally, its one of the slowest selling of the stainless steel sports line. So it will likely be phased out as the Milgauss comes more to the fore, and if Rolex introduces a Milgauss with date function, that would kill the languishing sales of the Exp II.

Ironstark, am I on the mark??????????

I never really understood why the Exp II is one of the slow sellers, I can only guess that its due to the fixed bezel, which is a limitation that would push a buyer who wanted the second time zone feature towards the GMT II.

But it has such a cool history, I dunno.

Just my 2 cents,

Chris

Good post, Chris....and right on the button.

The Exp-II is a superb watch....and who gives a damn about the fixed bezel. In fact, I much prefer the fixed bezel as I'm certainly no "bezel-fiddler"!!

I was I who made those observations regarding the cyclops shining like a diamond. This is due to the refection of light from the white dial through the cyclops. This is one model in the Rolex range that benefits from the inclusion of the cyclops in the design. What I did not say in my original description is the following ...

I think the following are unique for the white dialed Rollies. In the right lighting conditions, shadows are thrown on the white dial from the cyclops and hands. This ads to the spectacle of depth and contrast ..

Just like the Blue TT Sub dial which never looks the same, due to the colour change under different lighting conditions, the same is true for the white 16570.Here its not so much a colour change but changing of contrasts, which makes this design become "alive"

As for this model being "unpopular" at the sales point ... Many Rolex owners own only one Rolex.Thats a fact. The black dialed sporties being the first choice.I personally would also go that route,BUT,if you already own a black dial, the white 16570,should be the next one.It is a great design.Stylish, elegant, subdued, yet very eye catching, all at the same time ..

I agree,if going the multiple Rolex route, then each one should be significant in difference.Otherwise, whats the point ?? Significant difference, also keeps boredom at bay and assures wristtime for all.

The white dial 16570,comes HIGHLY recommended.

Great post, Chris.....have to agree with you all the way!!

I am very seriously considering the white Exp-II....but only once I bounce back on my feet.

I am sick and tired of being a one-Rolex man!!

I agree,a ss is a must,in even a modest collection.I wear the SD and Expl II,alternatively, for the purpose of work and keep the Blue King for special occasions.

Be patient,if you build it,they will come .......

One advantage if you own a GMT II,is that you will know exactly how the Expl II will wear. The case size and weight are very similar and the bracelets are in fact, identical.

A match made in heaven. After almost a week of non-stop wear I barely notice my GMT-II....glad the Ex-II will be another perfect fit!

I know this thread has been going for a couple of weeks but I must say how impressed I am by the way it developed. the views and pictures were great
The pictures by Ragu of his collection of classic Rolex sports/professional/tool watches was just superb......it just gives those new collectors like me a new take on different watches that we might like to own
The Sub and Gmt II are absolute essentials, and the Exp II makes a great contrast in a collection of 3 watches.......as 3 is probably going to be the final number that I will own, it has certainly given me food for thought
White Exp II or TT blue face YM as watch number 3 ?
The Sub is already mine, the Gmt II will be by the end of the summer, so I've only got one hard choice to make.......

I've never tried a blue sub on. I remember some pictures you posted a few weeks ago of a blue sub and a blue YM next to each other.....I think the question was about the shades of blue being slightly different.
Ive tried the blue YM on a few times and it just seems "right". The contrast between the gold on the bezel and the blue of the face really works for me.(lot of money for a watch though ).

That's exactly what I felt and thought when I sold off my earlier Blue Sub in order to upgrade to the Blue YM.

I had regrets later and then sold off the Blue YM in exchange for a new Blue Sub once again.

Perhaps you should try them both on at your AD and, in fact, even compare them side-by-side and see which one appeals more to you.

I really have to agree; I like Ragu's choices, as Mike put it, air (GMT), land (Exp II) and sea (Sub). The choices all represent something and bring something different to the collector's table.

Certainly thinking of a white dialed Exp II as a third........

You can use photobucket to showcase your photos and don't have to use the board to upload photos instead just link it to photobucket.

Anyone have nice pics, please feel free to ad to this topic.

Mine is a very late D serial (D97XXXX) and the bracelet is OP6.That would be June 2006.The bracelet was manufactured a month after the watch.

The purchase price at the current exchange rate was $4250,bnib and AD.I think that was most reasonable. Our MSRP here is a high $5900.I got less 28% for cash

The white Explorer II has really been calling me too and I thought I would only own dive watches. I like it because of all the Rolexes, it's the only one that's purely a tool watch. No white gold hands or markers, no precious metal in the bracelet, nothing. It's pure utilitarian, high legibility, usefulness

I would like to see more utilitarian thinking in the Rolex sports line. White painted hands and markers on black dialed models and maybe even a white dialed Submariner w/ an orange or red sweep hand. That would be the ticket.

JJ and BlueBull....re the "blue world".....I had to go to my AD in Colchester today to put down my deposit for a red hand GMT II (pepsi).
As I was there anyway I had a play with both the TT Sub and the TT YM.
I must admit JJ that I had underestimated the huge difference in the shades of blue between the two watches.
The sub is a real vibrant, living blue...whilst the YM is more of a blue/slate colour.
It wasnt after all about the way the dial changes in the light......
The YM is still the most complete package to my eyes(for a TT watch),but I couldnt have that knowing that the blue/slate is not as vibrant as the Sub.
The Sub has the best dial but somehow the bezel doesnt quite look right in blue/gold.....plus I have a Sub already.
The TT Sub did feel lovely on the wrist though.....I can see why so many of you love it so much

I you would like to see more utilitarian, you have the current model range, only. Its is clear, from Baselworld 2007,that Rolex is going bling-bling-bling ... I agree a white dialed GMT and Sub would be a nice alternative,BUT the hands should be kept black, perhaps a red sec sweep,no green, orange or any other sissy colour ...

Get the white 16570,great watch !!

Congrats on putting down a deposit on such a great watch!!

You'll love having the GMT II Pepsi: colourful, dynamic design yet classic and smooth, with the nicest light-catching coin edge bezel......speaking of the blue world, here's my GMT II in blue laser light.........
