Are certain shirt sleeve cuffs bad for a Rolex?

Hello Everyone,

Winter is upon us (at least for most of us in the Northern Hemisphere) and wearing long sleeved shirts or sweaters or jackets is commonplace. I like the fact that such attire protects my watch from accidental nicks and dings.

In my idle time, it crossed my mind whether there are certain types of fabric/material found in shirt cuffs or outer jackets, etc. that may be possible cause for concern. Are there fabrics that create more visible scratches on the bezel and bracelet than others? I realize the watch is mean to be worn and not coddled but it will be ideal to keep those pesky "wear and tear" tell tale signs to a minimum if at all possible.

Yes, no bubble wrap over watches pics.

Regards all and wishing you a great weekend!

Glad wrap it would prevent any scratches me thinks

The long coat sleeves will def put a few hairline scratches on PCL bits of the watch, especially TT watches. I have got over it. Figured that my health is more important

I need to see wrist pictures of your Rolex with a cuffed shirt or jacket. Does anyone match the color of the watch/dial with your color of your attire, assuming you have more than one watch?

I guess SS is a "fit all" with any attire.

I wore a shirt with orange in it, and intentionally picked my Milgauss.

As a rule of thumb, cotton would be your best bet, followed by synthetic fibers which are 'scratchier'. Either way, wear your Rolex and enjoy it! As the AD told me almost 20 years ago when I bought my first one (as I asked if I should be careful with my DJ): 'your Rolex will take anything that your arm can'

Not a shirt issue, but I recently scratched a bracelet pretty heavily in a coat pocket with a metal zipper.

Starch in cuffs does not help ss, rg, yg, wg, or pt. It creates micro-scratches on any shiny surface. So don't polish your watch with a shirt that's come back from the cleaners with starch on it!

My GMT's bezel has frayed more cuffs than I can remember, the watch is still fine, the shirts discarded!

That will definitely cause some minor scratches on the watch.

i would think that the wrangler denim shirt with the metal poppers on the cuffs would be bad for scratching.

I think the cuffs will prevent more scratches than they inflict.

As long as the material the shirts are made from is softer than stainless steel, I can't really see a problem. If you're still worried, I would suggest taking your watch off and storing it in its box next time you decide to wear a long sleeve shirt.

I disagree K. IMO small particles of dust and dirt picked up on sleeves during a normal working day will scuff stainless and expecially gold PCLs over time.

I can scuff the polished gold centre links on my GMT TTc with a casual glance.

If you wanted to match your dress shirt to your SUB, Turnbull & Asser is the way to go.

Enjoy your watch--if you are worried about shirt or cuffs scratching your watch--you are wasting good use of energy!

I wear a shirt/suit every day for work, and find it doesn't affect brushed S/S bracelets at all... PCL's on my old GMT IIc and Blue sub noticed straight away.
