Very strange - as it has the mercedes hour hand. Oyster P's do not have this.

I think he's referring to the fact that the dial doesn't say Explorer on it. Was a dial variant like that ever released or is this a aftermarket or re-dial?

I have no idea. Maybe it was damaged in the past, had a new crystal and aftermarket Oyster Perp. dial put in? - Just a guess

I too would be interested to know if anyone out there has any ideas?

I've never seen an Explorer that doesn't say Explorer on the dial.

Good question.

Maybe you should ask the seller and see what he says.

No, that was an Explorer wearing a Smith.

Even more strange then.. As far as I know, explorers have always had "explorer" on the face, as far back as the original 50's ones (I might be wrong though).

Well, the reference number on the case says that the watch should be an Explorer, and the serial number indicates that it should be a so called "blacked out" Explorer, but that dial, and the hands - if you ask me - are nothing that ever came from Rolex in Geneva. I might be wrong, but I am confident that I am not.

Perhaps someone needed the original dial more in a different 14270 case that were in better shape.

Looking forward to see some replies in the sales thread from the seller. I am curious on the history of this watch.

Best,

A
