Rolex Box Looks like a doggy bag
when compared to the box a Patek comes in.
I was watching this shown on TV about watches and they took this Patek out of a box and it was all wood, shiny, about twice as big as the DSSD's box and it woud put to shame any Rolex box ....Am I correct? I do not know much about Pateks.... Do they really come in a box so nice?? |

Yes they do...not all of them...but their presentation is very nice.

Personally I have no problems with the boxes Rolex uses. Id prefer them to spend time and money on the actual watch rather than coming up with a state of the art box which I will not see it from the 2nd day of the purchase. How many PP owners would also wear their box on their wrist? |

Well Rolex have never been renouned for their packaging have they?! PP are far more high end than Rolex but even brands of compairable quality such as Panerai have better packaging than Rolex from what I have seen.

What you have to keep in mind is that Rolex are producing many, many more watches per year than Patek and Panerai combined. If we're comparing to other brands that produce similar numbers, Omega for example, then the boxes are far more comparable. Omega's boxes for gents watches are leather, but I don't think they're as robust as Rolex's boxes. I'm sure we'd all love to have nicer boxes, but it's not essential

I am not a big fan of the newer boxes, I like the ones from 2001/2002 & older.

What does a box matter???
It sits in a closet, MANY people simply toss them. I can't recall who it is but one company now ships their watches in winder boxes (their price point is about 5K and up from what I recall) and now that is a GREAT package! A box that a client can truly use!

The price of the box contributes to the price of the watch.
No matter how fine the box is, I'm never going to use it for anything, except for purposes of integrity--box and papers. I buy watches. If I want a fancy box, I can go buy a fancy box. Thankfully, I have no need for fancy boxes. I don't even plan to be buried in a box, much less a fancy box.

My current Rolex has never been in a box. Not any box. Certainly not the one it came with. It went from that little plastic factory travel case to my wrist. I have the box in the event I should ever sell the watch. Then it will be part of the packaging for shipping. That is all a box means to me.

Patek's are significantly more expensive than Rolexes on average, so I would expect a nicer box with a Patek.

I like JLC's high end presentation boxes, nothing says simple elegance like an 1800lb Doettling safe.

I worked for a store in Pennsylvania that carried Patek and their boxes are incredibly nice. In one instance, we were missing one. When we ordered a replacement box, the fee was over $1000.

It appears to me that the only reason to keep the box is because many collectors and members on Forums such as this one say you must keep and save boxes!!!

I like the current box just fine. I believe that I will eventually care more about this topic and it will be then, that I need an intervention.

I've seen Patek boxes that were smaller than the current Rolex small box, and IMHO opinion, look less "cool" and expensive. Was not wood, but leather.

Personally I wish Rolex would put 'em doggie bags. Those boxes may come with the watches, but that doesn't mean they're free. We'd all save at least $100. I can go out and buy a nice box any time I want to...and I do not want to. I don't want to be forced to buy a nice box just because I want to buy a nice watch.

I used to be 'into' Pateks, but found over the years that the content wasn't there for the price, at least imho. I'm pretty sure the least expensive men's Patek is into the twenties of thousands these days. I guess Rolex must have decided long ago to put the investment into the watch instead of the box it comes in!
Btw, a lot of so-called 'luxury' watches come in very fancy-shmancy boxes, heavily polished wood, the finest velvet, brass hinges: BP, JLC, VC, etc. Big deal. What can you do with them after opening them up? Plus, if Rolex was to put close to a million watches a year into wooden boxes, where would our forests be? |

I had not given much though to the boxes but I have compared the customer experience. I was amazed how Breitling is so much better at courting existing customer by sending out the annual catalog, chocolates and gifts. I have never received anything from Rolex.

IMHO so is the Rolex box more comfortable than the Patek box that is way too heavy.

I don't wear the box, I wear the watch. Nice or cheap looking it gets stored in the closet regardless.

I personally love Rolex green box. It smells good too and it's a joy to keep it fresh and mint.

Sure they could give a nicer box for the money, but why bother when people seem more than eager to take what they currently give. It's a business model that continues to work for them.
