Tell the Boss
Does anyone here not tell their boss that they wear a Rolex? I didn't and he doesn't know what it is. I think I know his thought process, and it could work against me come bonus time.

I didn't and I'm glad that my boss does not know what it is.

I would never tell someone that I am wearing a Rolex. If they never notice, all the better to me.

Cannot see what difference in wearing any watch has to do with any working relationship. Its a watch and most people would not even notice what brand of watch you was wearing only perhaps a WIS.And if you think it would work against you, and cannot see any reason why, just because you wear a Rolex watch.Much like the millions of other workers worldwide simple answer wear a different watch.I would hope my boss would appreciate me for my work and not for any watch I was or not wearing.

I agree with the OP. In fact, the perception others will have is the one thing that gives me pause about going for my first Rolex.
I know others here will say, "Wear it with pride!" And, of course, I will. But there are plenty of people in the world who feel sorry for themselves and don't take the reins of their own lives, and they're just sitting there waiting to jump all over anyone who has. A Rolex is the perfect bait for them, nevermind if they've spent just as much or more on a motorcycle or entertainment system or cameras or whatever. I don't give them much time or credence, but they are out there and they are annoying. Anyway, Jocke has the right idea here. Work for yourself, then your boss will always know you need more money for more watches, right? ... Deldog |

I wear my watches for me. If my boss asked, it wouldn't matter because we don't get yearly bonuses...

No need to tell anyone, there are websites for mutual back patting and watch compliments, much like this one :)
Any time someone pulls out anything gold or rare it gets more compliments here than Natalie Portman at a star wars convention, and with no negative judgmental comments!

I'm not quite sure how you spend your money would influence the boss. In the end, it's your money, and he knows how much you earn. It's not like he's going to all of a sudden realize he's paying you too much.....
And it could just as easily work in your favor.....The boss could view your classy big-ticket item as a sign that you have ambition and want to work hard to earn your fair share to buy what you like. If your boss is petty about you owning a Rolex, I'd say he's probably not a good person to work for in another ways, too. |

Folks in the office know what my hobby is. Even so, they do not know, or care, what I wear.
I came late for a meeting once. MY boss's comment was: So many watches and you still manage to be late for the meeting?

I would never bring it up and no one in my office even notices my watches. I am not sure why or how I would even tell my boss I am wearing a Rolex. Even commenting to someone "Hey I am wearing a Rolex" seems a bit odd to me.

My Boss is an @sshole...he has no class and wouldn't know a Rolex from a Timex...and he would definitely hold it against me...because that is just the type of person he is...when a purchased my BMW he commented on how I was not buying from the BIG 3 supporting our local economy...even though I have 4 classic Fords at home...he only cares about his inner circle and those close to him, and he wouldn't think twice in stabbing me in the back...

Believe it or not, but very few people recognize that I am wearing a Rolex. Sometimes I catch people sneaking sideways glances. Truth be told, there are lookalikes out there by companies like invicta. Unless people can really get a god look, they will never know. I was working at another one of our offices Nd met a peer. He was wearing what at first glance looked like a gold Rolex with jubilee bracelet. I almost said nice Rolex. But, a second glance made me realize that it might have been a Seiko? I just kept my mouth shut. Don't worry about what others think. Do what makes you happy.

I just wear mine, if they notice it, fine; if they don't, that is OK also.

In my previous position, I supported the manufacturing line so I was always on the shop floor with the hourly folk. I never wore the Rolex to work because I didn't want to seem pretentious. G-Shock all last year.

The OP (and others) are right.
I had my own firm for 10-15? years & it I can honestly say it never bothered me how my employees spent their wages: but since the recession kicked in I now work for a larger firm where my boss(es) look at it that whatever I buy, ultimately they paid for it. W*nkers.

It's all about perception. I don't announce that I'm wearing a Rolex but I don't think that's what the op meant. I have had both good and bad reactions from those above me at work when they noticed what I was wearing.. Those that reacted well, seemed to look at it as some "badge" of success while the ones that responded poorly seemed to think I was making to much money. :) Again,,its all about perception.

Here's a funny one for you. My boss is not a watch guy. Makes a lot of money in his position (partner in a acct/fin firm). So my jaw literally dropped when he walked in the office after the Xmas holidays sporting a PP Calatrava...gift from his wife! I said, "nice watch," trying to be unassuming. He said, "yeah, it's nice...probably cost ME a fortune!" His wife stays at home! LOL! Doesn't really know what he has yet, even after my brief education. All of a sudden, my Sub kinda of seemed "ordinary."
