I dropped my GMTIIc :(

Hey guys,

Feeling a little sick right now as earlier on this morning when putting my baby on my wrist I pulled her from the watch box and... smashh! Straight on the bedroom floor!!

I froze for a second in shock thinking "oh god is it marked?"..

After full inspection and giving it a wash under the tap and a final polish... All is well and there is not one mark in sight!!!

This is a mistake I will not be making again, seen as I consider myself to be extra carful when handling my watches.

One thing which I am now worried about is did the fall shock the movement in anyway? Your thoughts would be appreciated.

I have noticed some slight play in the end pieces... is this anything to do with me dropping it or does every band have slight play in between the lugs? I'm talking not a lot of movement at all...

Maybe I'm noticing things more because I know its had a shock...

I know the movement on a new sub-c is 10x's more resistant to shock than the old model. I would assume the GMTIIc has a similar movement. Not by any means an expert but someone could confirm this!

I'd say that's about right Dino mate.

I dropped my GMTc on a hard-tiled floor while on hoilday last year & was almost afraid to pick it up but it survived the fall intact.

Can you please explain how the movement in the 116610 is 10 times stronger than the movement in 16610...? Just wondering....

Glad it's all okay Dino.
I'm sure most of us have either dropped or put a scratch or two on the watch.
Just keep your eyes on it for the next few days. Take into a RSC if something is wrong.

I believe it is called a parachrom hairspring! The Rolex website has a video about this material now used in the movement. It is blue in color

@Eric - Mateee!! I feel bad, I hope there is no loss or gain in time, whats the rating for COSC? is it -6 to +6 seconds a day? Thanks mate...

@liptonnr - Correct! Thats the part of the watch which I was worried has been affected by the shock... hopefully all will be okay!

@pcst - I was carful up until this morning! after this scare I know it won't happen again!

Not surprised - I took my watch off at security going into the court house last year and forgot that I had done so and stuffed it inside my jacket as it went through the x-ray machine. I whisked my jacket out of the bin and watched in slow motion as my watch went flying across the lobby and landed with a thud on the marble floor.

Not a scratch on it!

I'm sure it'd be okay mate, don't worry too much. That's what the warranty is for. It's -4/+6.

The parachrom hairspring is to do with magnetic resistance rather than shock resistance. Not that the old Nivarox hairsprings were bad at all, but as they're supplied by ETA and Rolex want everything to be 100% inhouse, Rolex are really pushing the hairspring as a selling point. In real life, you won't notice the difference between the two, in all honesty

It'll be fine. Keep an eye on it for a week or so to see if it loses or gains too many secs but i think it should be ok.

I know I used to be paranoid of dropping my GMT-IIc on something solid, but mostly because of the ceramic bezel. I kept picturing it breaking like glass if it got smacked. After time, and a 2 serious drops, I stopped worrying so much. I even started a poll on TZ to check the status of the new Ceramic bezels out there, now that we had a good size sample, and a handful of years of wear. Not a single break listed from a fall.

You're close. I think what you're worried about is damage to the "balance wheel" and the hairspring is part of this.

Most if not all modern automatics have shock protection systems. In an ETA movement they call it "Incabloc", in a Rolex it is called the "KIF" shock protection system with a full bridge.

In the link below you can see the KIF system in full view. It is basically the jewel in the center with the metal pin holding it in place. Notice the metallic "bridge" holding it in place goes all the way across for better stability.

Sorry to hear of your mishap... I did almost the same thing with my GMT c the other day, dropped it out of my hands onto my dresser and it hit HARD Hard enough to put a sizable ding in the wood on my dresser but nothing to the watch and it is running just fine.

I think you will be just fine but I agree it scares the hell out of you
