I Know My DateJust Is Waterproof..But...

Before I get flamed - this is not one of those "I baby my watch and I'm scared to let rain hit it" threads This is a legitimate concern of mine:

Would you guys recommend taking off a DJ when swimming? I ask because I leave for my two week wedding trip in the Caribbean in a few weeks and ideally I'd love to never take it off while there :)

I tried searching the site but had no luck finding info specifically about the Datejust.

I think I remember reading that swimming puts weird pressure on the watch or causes water movements that could potentially penetrate the DJ's crown. ie. it can handle going down 100m but if movement is added it isn't as waterproof? I think I'm wrong here but I swear I read that here somewhere once.

It's an Oyster - it must be ok right?? I'm not talking deep dives / swimming, no deeper than 10-20 feet I guess!

I just don't want to take an unnecessary risk if it's just not recommended to do that with a non diver..

If you both were under water, unless you had on an air tank, you would likely die before your Datejust did...

If it has been pressure tested reasonably recently it should be fine. If it hasn't been tested within he year perhaps you could get it done to reassure yourself. Swimming in a pool or the ocean should be fine. Have fun and have a great trip!

People have been arguing static pressure vs dynamic pressure for years without any resolution or proof that the watch is affected either way....

I believe that if your seals are sound, and your crown is screwed down, swimming is never going to be an issue with any Oyster Rolex... I have snorkeled and swim with an Explorer II without issue. It has the same sealing system as your DJ..

It's really a personal comfort issue.....

That's the thing. I know technically it should be fine but I'm looking for more a peace of mind response from some one at this point lol

Swimming with your Expy II bodes well for the sealing though!

I'd be more worried about scratching it when getting in or out of the pool or frolicking on the beach than the chlorine or salt water hurting it...

Well if I'm drinking heavily I'll be sure to leave it in the room safe haha

I'm not really concerned about the salt / chlorine I know that will wash right off. More concerned about penetration from motion etc.

People supposably swam across oceans with an "oyster" on their wrist and the watches survived.

I like to think my brand new date just is a bit more advanced then what they had on and hope it should be fine to snorkel and swim with!

Thanks. She's only a year old I'd like to assume she's still good.. hmm maybe I should just leave it in the safe during the day.

I've gone swimming with my dj without issue, and it's been quite a few years since I've pressure tested it. For this reason I wouldn't take it diving even though I won't reach the 100m pressure limit.

However whether in a pool or the ocean, i always spend a little time washing my watch off in the sink to get rid of the salt/chlorine...

For the most part when I say swimming I mean lounging towards the swim up bar lol

Maybe I'll just take it off for snorkelling and diving but won't worry about it in the pool!

It`s perfectly safe to swim with it, I did it with my Tudor Prince Date, and it is, despite obvious similarity with your DJ, waterproof to only 50 meters.
So, if Tudor can do, Rolex can do even better!

Your modern "Oyster" (trip-lock, etc) is made to go in water. No need to take it off unless you're doing some very deep scuba. I wouldn't leave it in the safe.

I swam in the ocean waves and pools with mine many times.

Not sure what the waterproof the dj has,if it's 300m then you really should not have a problem,300m is a long way down and the pressure would be huge,isn't part of the fun in having watches like this,is to use them as intended?

just wondering if the waterproofing should fail would that be covered under the warranty?

I swam in my DJ with no problem. I've even gone swimming with my Speedmaster.

You may have penetration from motion on your wedding day vacation but it won't be water in your watch from swimming!

I have a 16 year old Breitling Chronomat that hasn't been serviced in 8 years. I've jumped in a pool, lake and ocean without thinking twice about it without questioning it. I've done the same with all my watches except my Daytona (Only because I haven't had the opportunity). If I had to wonder about my Rolex being able to handle the same, I would have never have bought it.

You'll be fine! My DJ is 3 years old and I never take it off when in water. I've swam in ocean and pool with no problem whatsoever.

The only thing that I would be weary of a bit is the bracelet popping open in the ocean. This happened to me once. To fix this on my last trip to the ocean I put a NATO strap.

Be very careful leaving it in the in-room safe. Those are typically easily broken into if it is known that there is something rather valuable in it. Several places that I have visited in the Caribbean have had nothing more than something similar to a kid's tin lunchbox mounted on the closet wall.

You will die from pressure related problems before your DJ, unless you are a very experienced diver with special air mixtures so you can go down to over 100 meters...

Because he can. That's the point of the 100m resistance.
I swam with a 120m rated IWC for years. No problem with hard swimming or down to 10-15m. It will be safer on your wrist than in the hotel room safe. If you must, use the hotel's safe. Just ask for the manager. That's what I do when I buy valuables on vacation.
BTW, an area watch repair guy can pressure test your watch to 100m in no time, probably drop off today, pick up tomorrow. Call around. It's worth the $50 he'll probably charge.
Of course, the obvious answer is to buy a Sea-Dweller or Submariner before you go.
