They are popular for a reason.

Like many of the people in question on the cruise, I could probably afford something a little more expensive / exclusive if I really wanted but the Sub-C gets the job done for me with aplomb. I could easily have a more exclusive, better made brand of watch for less money but it doesn't fulfil all my objectives. E.g. I prefer my JLCs but right now they are not making a dive / dress / set-it-and-forget-it / wear all day every day type of do everything watch as well as Rolex. Nobody is. Every time I think about flipping something in my collection my wife reminds me I only ever wear my Sub-C now so what's the point

Do I wish it was a little less popular? Yes, of course but it's still a great, robust, good looking watch which commands a certain cachet. You can swim, work out, have a meal, do some activities, attend a black tie party in the evening and not have to change your watch or leave it in your room to be potentially lost or stolen. Perfect cruise / vacation watch IMHO which is probably why so many people were wearing them.

Rolex is, without a doubt, the biggest name mainstream luxury brand in the world overall. So, as such, you're going to see alot of them.

But, here's my theory. My sense, judging from the fact that most here are from the North America/U.S, is that there's sort of a combination dynamic here:

1. Generally speaking, Americans aren't that knowledgeable about other luxury brands even some WIS. (note some) That's probably a function of advertising. Rolex is the only luxury watch brand that dominates in terms of advertising in the U.S.

2. Generally speaking, Americans would rather spend $ on big cars and houses. So, if they're going to buy a watch, they'll just get a Rolex by default because it's the only "luxury" watch they've heard of.

The combination of those two things, I think, make for the seeming ubiquitous nature of Rolex watch spotting here.

My sense is that in other areas of the world....Europe, Asia, South America--you'll certainly see a ton of Rolexes in certain "high rent " areas ( even a majority) but you'll see more of other brands.

Thoughts? No flames please. I'm just observing...and that's my perception from what I've seen on forums and everyday life.

Only been on one cruise, but I loved it. It was one of the less expensive ones, but the service was top-notch. The food was nothing to write home about, but I appreciated the pampering and attention to detail. I played cards everynight next to several wearing Rolex Datejusts. A whole lot of fun and a whole lot of Rolex watches.

That's kinda the issue isn't it - it's an relatively common and many buy it because it's a Rolex which actually becomes a turn off for me.

I own the deep sea and the daytona because they are beautiful watches in their own right but they are times where I don't want to be seen wearing them because of the wrong attention they garner. Anyone of you get the sae feeling sometimes?

When I went on a cruise last year, I saw so many rolexes, mainly subs and DJs that upon arrival I sold my Sub and purchased a PAM 24, never looked back...

I like Rolex and only Rolex and enjoy when I see many of them. Can't be bothered with exclusivity, this is not the reason I bought it. I bought it because it is a great watch.
Recently I went to a cocktail of the Owners Association of the resort where I live. 80% of the men had a Rolex and perhaps 50% of the women. Just great!

I know you're mostly kidding, but, though I suspect my new Sub C will steal my wrist for a while, the 24 is actually a really nice watch, its 7750 is remarkably well adjusted, robust, the watch honestly keeps incredible time. Great Lume, very inspiring and attractive design, it's not quite what the Sub C is, but with the sub now at 8k, it's also $1200 less. When I first saw a Panerai years ago I did initially wonder if it was a fad, I no longer believe that's the case. Our wrists have room for lots of brands, though you'd look silly if it was at the same time. :)
