Datejust for first purchase?

Hi all, new to here. I've been enjoying the read on here. So informative, it's great! I'm wanting to get my very first Rolex. Was thinking about a new SS, DJ, silver dial with diamonds, jubilee, 116234. However, it appears the more popular Rolexes and the ones to hold value are the sport models such as the sub dates like the sub c. I know it comes down to what one likes, but just wanting to hear your thoughts/opinions. It probably won't be a daily wearer. I like the look of both. I'm sure I would end up with another rolex later on, maybe a sub, after getting the bug on here.

My first purchase was a DJ and I thought it was the best looking in the Rolex lineup then.

Now I have four and still loving my DJ. BTW, welcome to TRF.

Started with the sub then got the datejust TOG. And finally my Daytona.

It really doesn't matter what order IMO

you cant go wrong... but I would leave the diamonds out...

My first and only Rolex so far is a DJ. I can wear it with dress clothes and casual. Therefore, I think it's a great first Rolex which is why went with it over a different model. It's tough though because now I really want a Sub. Rolexes are addictive.

The diamonds are not my thing...I truly think they ruin a Rolex.

How about a more classic choice?

Congrats, sounds like you have the Rolex bug. If you really like the particular DJ model you mention - go for it. Whilst value rentention is a consideration, I'd say it's a secondary one especially when it's your first Rolex. Look forward to the pics...

why not? if you like it thats all that should matter. Personally I think the Datejust is one of the classiest watches out there. Looking forward on some pictures when you get it, good luck with your hunt

My first (and only) Rolex is a SS DJ. I find I can wear it anywhere and it looks great. I wore an Omega SMP for years and years and it always bothered me that I was wearing a diving watch and I wasn't in the water. So my point is that it's very apropo for most real life occassions.

I can see if I was a "tee shirt and jeans" type of guy, a Subbie might be a good choice.

I think a DJ would be a great first purchase for you. The sub and the DJ are completely different. Since the DJ is more dressier and with the added diamonds. Later on you can upgrade yourself to a Sports model maybe for an everyday wear. Oh also, don't get caught up with the resale value crap, just get what you like the best. You're gonna end up with a bunch of them anyway. Good luck!

You can't go wrong with the DJ. But since you stated that it probably won't be your daily wear, you'll most likely want to get something more casual after the DJ anyway, so why not start with a SS Sub-C?

The DJ is Rolex's best-selling model. The sport models may be more popular among the sort of person who posts to TRF but out in the world The DJ is the top dog.

The DJ is a great watch, I know I like mine. Get whichever one you want the most, you'll value that one more in the end.

Agree that the DJ without diamonds is a superb, classic choice. Not everyone has to wear a Sub, since not everyone favors the sporty look as their dominant style. Hope you check all the dial options, too.

I started with the Datejust just last summer (pic in my avatar). I highly recommend it! It's a great daily wearer in a t shirt or polo and it obviously dresses up wonderfully!

DJ is AWESOME! I have a GV, AK and DJ and the DJ is timeless. You can't go wrong with it and it will hold its value (because holding its value really depends on the speed with which you want to sell it).

I started with a Datejust and then I got an Explorer II....If I had to do it all over again I would have started with the iconic Sub the 16610....Even though there are a lot of them out there I still think that is the one Rolex to own.

I'm fortunate to have 3 nice watches, 2 Rolex, 1 Tudor (which, to the chagrine of many I suppose, I consider a Rolex). My DJ was my first, followed by the Sub and Tudor. Must admit, I don't give the DJ near enough wrist time, but I love it, it's a "classic." One thought though is I'm not fond of potential buyers necessarily giving so must thought to future value, etc. But that's just me. Buy the watch you LOVE!

Oh yeah, not a big fan of diamonds either; I think without presents a much "cleaner" look.

You can't go wrong with Datejusts-- they're absolute classics. If you're concerned about "holding value", this really isn't an issue when you're buying pre-owned. With pre-owned, you get the benefit of any price drops, and each model tends to find its own level. It's mainly when you're buying new that resale can be a concern.
