New to the world of Rolex

Hello all,
I have been interested in buying a Rolex for a while now and have started lurking on this site to get some more info. I currently am wearing an Omega Railmaster and own a Tissot PRC200 for when I am feeling a little more sporty. Any advice on a good first Rolex? (I am probably going to buy pre-owned since I can't afford the new price hikes haha)

IMO you can't beat a ss submariner, classic, sporty and elegant..to be fair they are pretty popular so if you don't want to be like everyone else you could go for an explorer 11 like me! :)

SS subc all the way. it is just the perfect watch. This is coming from a former rolex hater. as soon as i saw the new ss subc, i went to the AD and said "size it".

All depends on what you like. Look around and narrow it down to a few and find a trusted seller. There are a lot to choose from and it all comes down to personal preference!!

WELCOME!

I love the Sub as well, but forget about that.

Which Rolex appeals to you most???

Have you perused this site and rolex.com to get an idea? Your first Rolex - provided it is not a $30K Vintage Daytona - should be the one you like and can afford used.

I am looking to spend hopefully $4,000 or less...

I have looked at the submariner and it just seems too bulky for my style. I know it's only 40mm but I never really liked large bezels. Would people consider the Datejust an every-day watch?

I would be looking for an LV Sub, Exp2 or a pepsi GMT if you are wanting to buy a second hand Rolex.

The DJ, while not a model I care for is considered a very good everyday watch. I would be looking for one with an oyster bracelet. I don't care for the jubilee and they seem to be prone to stretching.

If the sub is too bulky then the datejust is the one for you.

It is a great everyday watch and lots of dial options, and 2 bracelet options.

One of my flying buddies wears a SS DJ w/ Jubilee bracelet. It catches my eye every time...

I think that's a great choice. You can get an older model for < $2500 in many cases. Newer ones can be had for < $4000.

My wrist is 6.5" The 36mm watch sits just right...although I like my Sub as well.

I wanted a silver stick dial, fluted bezel on jubilee. Could not find the precise older model I wanted, so I got a newer one. Love it:

My first choice would be an Explorer I, but since you already have a railmaster might as well go for a sub for your first Rolex. Good luck on your search

Yeah, I have been looking at some photos of the jubilee and have seen what you are talking about.

What is the most recent serial year that I would be able to find for <$4000? (I have been looking at the for sale section here and online and there seems to be some variability)

What about an Explorer II, they seem to wear a bit samller than a Sub. Or there is the Sub ND again a smaller feel to it

I really liked the Explorer I (and Air King) but they are just too similar to the Railmaster. When I bought the Railmaster, I thought to myself that I wouldn't need a date window...lesson learned haha Next watch will have a date window and a cyclops won't hurt. I find myself looking for the date much more often than I would have imagined...

Hi MikeyP,

If you like the jubilee on the Datejust look for a superjubilee(hidden clasp) on models from about 2005 onwards. Solid-link construction, and not prone to streching like the old ones.

If the sub is too big, try an Explorer I 36mm. Underrated, IMO, and a very nice watch.

Beautiful watch! Great to actually see it on the wrist. What year is the model?

Glad you like it.

This is a V Series. So it could have been made in late 2008 onwards.

The old style GMTs (16710) wear small too and much like the DJ is quite good for everyday wear. You can buy two other different bezel inserts on the GMTII.

Happy hunting!

I think the SS Sub or the new Exp11 would be a nice first Rolex.

At $4000, you could get a great DateJust, Explorer 1 36mm or a Sub No Date (My favorite). All in all, you can't go wrong with any of them.

I can definitely understand the classic appeal...it's just something about the bezel that doesn't do it for me...can't pinpoint what it is though

Welcome Mike

In these parts most are going to tell you to buy a Sub.
I see you stated you did not like the bezel. Check out the Expoler II. New model is on the way & now seems like a good time to pick one up.
