Icon5 The magic of Rolex

Very likely, there are several better and cheaper watches than Rolex. At the same time, there are also several better and more expensive watches than Rolex, yet there is a countless number of people who are still craving to own a Rolex watch, at least one during his life-time.

What is the magic of Rolex, you reckon?

The magic of Rolex is that they had cool advertising and GREAT product placement back in the day, they were way ahead of the game. They then kept the reputation because the product delivered on it's promises.

It was all the cool images of Rolex (think Bond, National Geographic) that made us all grow up wanting one SO bad it hurt!!!

'Better'? In what way? What makes a 'better' watch?

1) quality, long lasting product
2) good advertising
3) the "name" Rolex has a pleasing sound, appealing to all languages.
* don't underestimate the power of a name. For example, Omega is an abrasive sounding name, Seiko , Panerai, Cartier etc... are tied to specific cultures. The name Rolex is unique in that it has the connotation of smooth movement, can be applied to a range of watch model categories, and generic enough to appeal to all the world's ethnicities.

The answer of course, is heroin....all Rolex metals are infused with heroin which is why they are addictive - one is never enough, when you get one you're okay for a while but then you need another fix (watch), they just leave you wanting more!!!

At least that's what my wife keeps telling me!!

You're right. Ask yourself why Google ended up way ahead of Yahoo, or even better, AltaVista? Remember them? Me neither. :) Whoever thought of the name Google wins a prize.

Needless to say, I often Google Rolex. :)

I just think my DJ is the best-looking watch available at any price.

I also like that it is solid and well-sealed and I like the two tones.

It just works for me!

Every Item has its KING for example:

American Sports Car= Corvette
TV's= Panasonic or Samsung
Golf Clubs= Taylormade
Boats=Sea Ray

The King of watches is ROLEX and always will be.Long live the King.

Brand recognition and price and its positioning.

Brand recognition is the best in the world.
Price is not too much expensive but enough expensive to make it desirable. (It has been changing though.)
Positioning: Rolex has no direct competitors they are not high, not low, not in the middle, but just above middle.

I have a personal unscientific observation.

Rolex has generally been considered to in the same luxury level/class products as BMW or Mercedes cars, with various price points for each brand. Coincidentally they are also produced in roughly the same quantity of approx just under a million units each year.

Now, take a year's production of each brand and look at them 10 years later: Most of the BMs and Mercs would have been scrapped. Of those still on the roads, most would be worth only a very small fraction of their original purchase price.

After 10 years of use (and sometime abuse! ) almost all the Rolexes would still be ticking merrily away, and most of them would still be worth at least their original purchase price, with the SS sports models most likely to be worth more than the original purchase price.

I can't think of any other luxury products that are so readily available and yet have such endurance and overwhelming desirability. Rolex has no need to go down the path of issuing "limited edition" watches that so many brands resort to. Such is the power of the brand ROLEX, with great products back by great marketing

Nah, boats = Azimut.....you just cannot beat Italian style in a yacht, unfortunately they come with Italian engineering too (just kidding folks, thankfully they are most certainly NOT built like a Fiat/Lancia )

IMO i think that have done the perfect job of marketing to the masses. whenever you think of luxury watches the first company that comes to mind is Rolex. and anytime you are considered successful the first thing that comes to mind is Rolex.

not saying i agree or disagree...this is just my observation.

Rolex is a Luxury Watch and is held as a status symbol by many. Yes, there are more expensive brands but none as well known as ROLEX. Being able to afford a Rolex is a milestone in life when you had to work for it......hence the magic!!!!

You may be right about that. My neighbor just bought the new 55" top of the line Samsung. I have never seen a better picture. It's incredible.

TV's:: Bang & Olufsen
Golf:: you will definitely find Ping is golfs Rolex equivalent though the best clubs could be Vega!!
